I'll be frank - 'dark electro' 'aggrotech' or whatever term you prefer - is probably my least favorite sub genre of 'industrial' music. Often the songs follow a simple, tired formula: patch together some hard dance beats and trancey sounds, insert some horror movie samples and lay some screechy, Starscream-esque vocals on top and voila! You have a typical 'dark electro' song; there are countless groups with a near identical sound, and if you've ever walked into your local club on 'goth' night, you've probably heard a handful of them yourself.

While Unter Null does incorporate many elements from the genre, Erica Dunham(the sole creator of the project) is far ahead of the pack. While the vocals are still often distorted, the lyrics themselves have more depth and intelligence, sounding genuinely inspired rather than relying on manufactured rage or describing some gruesome slasher movie scene. That isn't to say Unter Null is free of seething anger(Check Visceral, Venom of My Being if you're in doubt), but the range emotions on display here are far greater. While the music can certainly be danceable at times, Erica relies on more than just synthesizers and dance-worthy beats; she is also more than competent at incorporating piano melodies among her synths and beats, as is the case in the wonderful "Tear Down the Walls". She also apparently has a sense of humor - for those craving a song crafted for clubs, look no further than the aptly titled "Obligatory Club Hit To Appease The Masses" and consider yourself appeased.

So, if you're like me and a bit wary of sifting and slogging through any number of cookie-cutter 'clubdustrial' groups, do yourself a favor and skip over the countless Suicide Commando/:wunpscut: clones and make "Moving On" one of your purchases instead. Here you'll find a real artist with genuine emotion and intelligence, rather than 'scary' club music with paper-thin lyrics solely aimed at the dancefloor. Highly recommended.
