Excellent New Wave band that some called Punk,
This review is from: Moving Targets (Audio CD)
I bought the original Import LP of this when it first came out at the old Music Plus store and I loved this album from the day I bought it. However, I consider Penetration more of a "new wave" band than just a "punk" band because they were so diverse in their styles and sounded better than many of the punk bands of that era from the late 70's, and I was never much of a fan of those other punk bands. Pauline Murray had a very unique and different voice, unlike any I've heard before or since, and I think she was an outstanding vocalist, and her album "Pauline Murray and The Invisible Girls" is a one-of-a-kind classic in my opinion. This album rocks and there's no bad tracks. If you like any kind of new wave/punk bands, you must hear this debut LP by Penetration, it's an outstanding album! Glenn Signal Hill, CA

This CD is soooo good!!! It never grows old. Pure Punk Rock. Pity that Penetration was such an underrated group. I love Punk Rock (Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash, Blondie, Patti Smith) and I think Penetration stands side by side with the greatest ones.

This debut LP from Penetration is hard to pin down. It has punk elements (evidenced by covers of the Buzzcocks' "Nostalgia" and Patti Smith's "Free Money), but had a sound closer to new wave. The songs are consistently strong, but rarely as brilliant as the best groups they emulate. The band avoids cliches of romantic, commercial rock, but the lyrics have never been particularly strong or innovative.MOVING TARGETS doesn't exactly capture the band's live electricity, but is a competent rendering of the Penetration at their most creative and consistent. The vocals of Pauline Murray solidify and give distinction to the sound. Best of all, you can still listen to these songs long after other bands have become passe.

Another Lost Classic,
This review is from: Moving Targets (Audio CD)
This CD hasn't left my player for a couple days now. On first listen I many times glance over classic CD's. When I replay them I am shocked at how good they are. This is the fun of collecting records. Penetration has been difficult to assess from the start. They only have two releases plus a greatest hits CD. Greatest hits should cover everything you need from two CD's, but since Moving Targets got ace reviews and I always get burned by hits packages I went with Targets, which had a few unrepeated tracks. "Don't Dictate", on both,is an instant classic, unfortunately when listened to side by side to other songs they paled in comparison. At first that is. After a few plays they start to sink in and become as memorable as "Don't Dictate". It makes you wonder why they never achieved the cult status of X-Ray Spex. Both have powerful female singers, write catchy, interesting songs that stay true to the punk sound. Plus both singers names start with a P. X-Ray Spex does add horns to their mix. Plus Polly attacked modern commercialism with their lyrics and eventually became a Hare Krishna. To me Germ Free Adolescenets And Moving Targets are both classics that are recommended.

A Short Lived Band...,

Among the rarities we are often used to discover in the huge jungle of Punk Rock we find Penetration. A band of which I only know two studio albums (If I'm not wrong), but this one seems to be a collection of reissued songs. It's interesting the Buzzcock's cover of Nostalgia, but it's a bit softer. Anyway I always find a pleasure to hear Pauline's Murray voice, but you should try to hear the Penetration album because it'll give you an idea of how powerful they were in their first short term. 'Don't Dictate' is a classic by the way.Greetings!!! |
