Book Description

May 6, 2008

The minister the New York Times described as “Billy Graham and Oprah rolled into one” shares her winning formula for facing life’s transitions with confidence and faith.

A dynamic religious leader, Suzan Johnson Cook epitomizes the positive attitude and self-help spirit that can take you from where you are to where you want to be. Whether you are facing a career change or moving to a new city, dealing with aging parents or settling into an “empty nest” after your children have grown, she teaches you how to move on without messing up. This book will capture your attention and advance you toward a new spirit of liberty and “UPness.” The Journey of Life is a series of steps—some forward, some backward, but always important. The steps here will take you on the Journey of Life you’ve always wanted.

Moving Up sets out the ten steps that will lead you to a new, more satisfying place in life: Stand Up, Speak Up, Look Up, Book Up, Kiss Up, Listen Up, Hang Up, Make Up, Wake Up, and Cheer Up. Using an engaging combination of autobiographical vignettes, her experiences as a pastor, and biblical stories, Cook illustrates each step—and concludes each chapter with simple exercises and helpful suggestions for incorporating Moving Up’s lessons into your own life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Following on the heels of Live Like You're Blessed, Cook, the first woman president of the Hampton University Ministers' Conference, advocates a can-do approach to life. Using the example of the daughters of Zelophehad (known for claiming what was rightfully theirs, though their father died without a male heir), she encourages readers to stand up, speak up, look up, book up, kiss up, listen up, hang up, make up, wake up and cheer up. Other biblical references and personal anecdotes fill out the pages—complete with suggested exercises for re-energizing commitments to self, community and God. Individual chapters read much like a Sunday sermon, and some, particularly early in the book, are imbued with the oral tradition of message repetition. Especially strong are the chapters on hanging up (finding the clear beginning and... clear end of the seasons of relationships) and making up (refusing to stay offended and practicing forgiveness). Christian readers who are already familiar with her work and those looking for fresh inspiration will find her enthusiasm contagious.(May 6)

Life is a journey, a series of significant steps one takes, sometimes forward, sometimes backward, but always important. --Dr. SUJAY

One of Dr. Cook's primary goals in MOVING UP is to capture reader's spirit and advance them to what she terms an 'UPness'. Her ten steps, on which she offers in-depth teachings, are simply: Stand Up, Speak Up, Look Up, Book Up, Kiss Up, Listen Up, Hang Up, Make Up, Wake Up and Cheer Up.

Dr. Cook shares a priceless message that liberates and invigorates, and which does not bow to negative forces. Whether your nemesis is a changing career, dealing with the challenges of life and age, or simply relocating to another city, you can face these situations head-on, and with every confidence. With biblical references and doses of her life, as a wife, mother and pastor, Dr. Cook underscores each one of the steps. At the end of the chapters are suggestion and short exercises to further enhance the messages. All of the chapters are expressive and informative, but the chapters on finding the clear beginning and clear ending of relationships, refusing to stay offended and practicing forgiveness, are excellent.

MOVING UP charts only ten 'ups', but Dr. Cook hopes each reader will incorporate some ups of their own and take them to a higher level. Dr. Cook is deeply rooted in her religion, and along with her message on the importance of having God in your life, she also shares the blessings for the natural side of life, but only if you stay focused, committed and positive. This is a wonderfully uplifting and inspiring read.
