Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-This oversized volume, containing a single story from Kipling's Jungle Book, is illustrated with black-and-white wood engravings, ranging in size from full page to small depictions of a single animal or plant. While the style won't immediately appeal to children, Wormell, a master of the medium, has created some memorable images, such as Akela, leader of the wolves, lying on his rock before the gathered pack; or Mowgli hunkered down among the wolves, picking burrs from their fur. The paper, which is a heavy, textured stock, changes every few pages from muted green to orange to shades of gray. Unfortunately, since the engravings are rather dark, there is not always sufficient contrast to see the details easily. In fact, the pictures on the endpapers, which are on muted orange stock printed with a slightly brighter ink, are all but indistinguishable. The text, in rather small type, is arranged in a narrow column, bound by a thin gray line on the left side. Even when small illustrations are added, there is at least as much margin as printing on each page. Although interesting, this offering has a formal elegance that is likely to appeal more to adults than to children.

From Library Journal

The renewed interest in Kipling is well served by the four stories in this production: "Mowgli's Brothers," "Kaa's Hunting," "Tiger-Tiger!," and "Letting in the Jungle." The selections tell of the adventures of a boy adopted by wolves and taught the laws of the jungle and the ways of each species. The boy must defend himself against Shere Khan, the tiger, and return to the village that cast him out. Those who only know Disney's cartoon version will be delighted with the original works' rich language and sophistication. Morever, these stories are for adults as well as children because, as true classics, they are moral tales open to many interpretations. The text is superbly read by Ralph Cosham. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars book as work of art, December 18, 2006
I disagree with the assertion that the elegance of this book won't appeal to children (as is stated in the book description). With my kids, they appreciate well designed and artful things because they are exposed to them. I don't underestimate their ability to discern and appreciate good design. The color of the paper stock complements the engravings and provides a nice ambience to the story. Christopher Wormell is one of my favorite illustrators - check out The New Alphabet of Animals by him.
