Moxi...Best DVR ever, but the mate doesn't measure up,
This review is from: Moxi Mate MP-1000 Digital Video Player (Black) (Electronics)
The MOXI DVR unit itself is by far the best DVR ever made. Unfortunately, the Moxi Mate (this review) is simply a gigantic disappointment. The concept is OK, but the implementation is just extremely poor. Essentially, the Moxi Mate is acting as a relay point between a Moxi DVR and the TV the mate is connected to. It simply pulls data from the DVR and projects it on the TV. In theory, this seems OK because it allows the user to view live tv and recorded content from the Moxi Mate without having to purchase another expensive DVR or rent another cablecard. The problem with this is that the Moxi Mate is just a middle man, and a very very slow, sluggish one. It doesn't have a tuner itself, so it has to pull video from the Moxi DVR, and not from the coax cable itself. Every single user input is very slow and it takes the unit about 4-6 seconds to change channels and to recognize fast forward, rewind, and play commands, making the Mate simply unusable. I am not sure why the Mate has a hard time pulling video from the DVR and why it acts so sluggish. My home network is very sophisticated and wired and I do not experience any latency issued between any of my devices. I even spoke with tech support and they said that delay in the Moxi Mate is normal, which really is a bad sign that the delay and sluggishness is expected. The Moxi Mate SHOULD work without delay, as I have other devices that essentially do the same thing (stream video from one device and project it on another) with an Apple TV and an XBOX360. These devices do the same thing a Moxi Mate does (except for streaming live TV), but do so without the delay. This means that technology exists to stream HD video from another device on the local network, just the Moxi Mate simply does not do a good job of it.
I bought the 3 room bundle (3 tuner DVR and 2 mates). LOVED the DVR, but hated the mates. I returned the mates and bought a 2nd DVR (only 2 tuner this time), and for my 3rd room, just used a vintage series TiVo. I'd recommend people absolutely buy the Moxi DVRs instead of these mates. It is costlier, but it's best to have an actual DVR for each TV that you frequently watch, and for less used TVs, just plug straight into the wall, or rent a cheap standard def set-top box. Remember, if you've got a newer digital TV, even if you plug straight into the wall, you STILL get major networks (Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc) in HD without any equipment, and you get your standard cable channels in standard def. Either way, AVOID the mate for now until they fix the extreme laggy issues which make it unusuable.

Moxi Mate is part of the best premium cable multi room DVR system,

When you add the Moxi Mate to the Moxi DVR you will have the best premium cable multi room DVR solution.
Unlike Tivo, you have the ability to stream live TV or any of your TV recordings to Moxi Mate extenders. There is no waiting for programs to copy. There are no copy restrictions based on obscure cable company and TV network digital rights flags. It just works. Unlike a Windows Media Center PC, Moxi has a good extender solution. With a Windows Media Center system the only extender that is still being made is the Xbox 360. The Moxi Mate is smaller, has no noisy fan, and uses much less power. To get your Moxi system to work you will need to have a home network. Moxi recommends a wired network but if you don't have ethernet cable installed in your home Moxi supports the use of MOCA adapters. MOCA adapters will allow you to use your existing cable TV outlets to provide the high speed network that multi room HDTV on the Moxi requires. If you subscribe to premium cable channels you will also need a cable card from your cable company. With my cable company the installer had problems provisioning the card but Moxi support was able to tell the cable company installer the commands they needed to execute back at the office to set up the card. Moxi support knew the cable companies system better than the cable companies own workers!

Got Moxi, love it and my Moxi Mate, just wish it was a little snappier,

This review is from: Moxi Mate MP-1000 Digital Video Player (Black) (Electronics)
I had Comcast's pathetic DVR unit for a year and couldn't stand it. Getting tired of paying monthly to rent their unit plus pay for the remote which I never used and the ability to get HD on one TV in the house not all My HD TV's I decided to make the investment of [...] for the Moxi and Moxi Mate bundle.
First I can't say how much better the user interface and menu system is. It takes a little getting used to scrolling around, but it is a thousand times better than any DVR on the market. I am saving a bunch of money which makes this bundle pay for itself in a year or less now that the Moxi Mate has the Live TV feature. So once the unit is installed it is a joy to use. I would have given the unit a 5 star rating, except for two things: 1. Installation was a bit of a pain, as it requires a internet connection. You can't even get past the boot up without the ehternet connection. This caused issues as I had to get this working first before I could have the Comcast cable guy install the Cable card. The unit won't do wireless, and I have to recommend the Netgear MOCA if you dont' have an Ethernet jack next to the unit. 2. The user interface and connection to the remote needs to be snappier. Hopefully this is something that they can fix in software, but when clicking a button on the remote there is a very slight delay in seeing the action on the screen. It isn't really bad, but I just don't like a delay in seeing stuff happen on the screen and when you push the button on the remote. The last thing I will mention about this bundle is the money savings over time. While the bundle is pricey, you do save that money in the long run. There are no monthly subscriptions like a Tivo, and you aren't renting the box indefinitely from the cable company. So the upfront payment is an investment. Also the Moxi Mate now have Live TV through the unit, which is awesome. It means that you only pay the cable company for the HD channels and you don't have to pay for a special HD box. It allows me to get HD cable content on both my HD TV's and only paying once for it. Probably the best feature overall.
