4.0 out of 5 stars moxy revue
Had the album since the early 70's and now its out on CD finally. The album is great soft metal because Tommy Bolin does session work and the rest of the material is also outstanding especially Fantasy and Moonrider

I happened to pass by a reference to this old mid-70s bar-rock record and thought I'd add my penny's worth: the title of this review sums it up--you had to be there. Moxy was a regional Canadian band that shared time and space with (take a deep breath; here come some obscure names for non-Torontonians) Max Webster, Cinema Face, Lighthouse, James Leroy, Wireless, Goddo,...

Another brilliant first album by a Canadian group. The lyrics and music are great. This is simply a masterpiece of 70's Rock! Although the whole band plays well as a unit the frontmen are Buzz Shearman on vocals and Earl Johnson, who has a flamboyant guitar style. Tommy Bolin also makes some guest appearances on the album. Unforgettable songs include "Sail On...", "Still I Wonder", "Moonrider" and "Fantasy". There isn't a weak moment on this album. The only curse would be Shearman losing his voice after only a few records and then his untimely death. Moxy and Moxy II, though, are great albums, particularly if you like harder, although not always, rock, or, are just a huge fan of the 70's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moxy on CD!, April 2, 2002

What a great recording! From a record that came out in 1977 the music holds up well. Buzz Sherman wailing, guitars jamming, drums just kickin' ... and takin' names. You gotta love this- it was popular in the Midwest. Sail on Sail Away was a great KSHE tune in St. Louis. Fantasy, Time to Move On, Still I Wonder, all great songs. Give it a listen every time I do it brings back good memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moxy's Debut Still Smokes, February 2, 2004

This excellent 70's Hard Rock band from Canada had some exceptional guitar work from Earl Johnson and Buddy Caine. If you like that sweet and crunchy Les Paul tone through Marshall Amps/Cabinents, this band is it. Singer Buzz Shearman matched the guitar work with some howling vocals. Drummer Buddy Caine and Bass player Terry Juric laid down some serious backbone to support the sound.
Add this CD with Moxy's second release, MOXY II, for a good taste of 70's Rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Classic After All These Years, August 4, 2004
This review is from: Moxy (Audio CD)
I'll never forget the first time I heard this record. I grew up in a small town and our local Gibson's Discount Center didn't carry a whole lot of records. The closest actual city was 100 miles away so it wasn't that often you could go and find new stuff to listen to. One of my friends came back to town with this (on 8-track of course!) I was completely blown away by this music. It's still one of my favorite records of all time. The vocalist (the late Buzz Shearman) was so incredible. This band made 2 more good records Moxy II and Ridin' High but this first effort is by far the best. I still have to pull this out every so often to remind myself what real rock was.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Start of Something Big, December 19, 2001

Moxy's first effort and well done. Nice blend of good writing and hard rocking Earl Johnson. The start of the bands core in the Moxy style of rock. Hard guitar riffs and ruff vocals by the great Buzz Sherman. Sail on Sail Away is a nice tune that uses an acoustic front only to cresendo into a Zep like guitar riff. Some stand in work on a couple of songs by the late great Tommy Bolin. Very good start and a album that the true Moxy fan will have in his or her collection.

I pulled this CD out the other day after not listening for 5 years. Listening with older and wiser ears, I realized that this CD is REALLY GREAT. People talked about the singing and lead playing but listen to the riffs and grooves, good stuff. Nothing groundbreaking, just well executed and HOT. If you have this, give it a fresh listen. If you don't, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Underrated Hard Rock, April 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Moxy (Audio CD)
MOXY is a great album from the band of the same name. It's a shame that the wider public have never heard of them, and that the critics have given them such a bad name, but I think that this record typifies 70s metal as well as any Foghat or Ted Nugent record. Get it if you can.

One of the most underrated Canadian bands of the 70's. I wore this album out when I had it. Even had the chance to meet the guys and party with them in the 70's and still count this album as one of my all time faves. RIP Buzz.
