Book Description

Country guide September 1, 2002
This newly updated edition of Mozambique will whet the appetite of independent travelers. After uncertain years of war and natural disaster, this guide encompasses the changes that have taken place. Southern Mozambique is only a days' drive from Johannesburg, with the capital Maputo lying just over the border, making it an easy extension of a visit to South Africa. The south coast of Mozambique is exceptionally beautiful; beaches lined with palm tree and world-ranking snorkeling, diving, and game-fishing locations are all highlighted, along with listings of exceptional restaurants and resorts. For backpackers exploring off-the-beaten-track Africa, the challenges of getting to and around northern Mozambique are described. Also detailed is Ilha do Moçambique--a small coral island and Cultural Heritage Site boasting a formidable fortress and claiming to be the oldest European settlement in East Africa.

Library Review

‘The Guide to Mozambique is both readable and informative. The information is bang up-to-date – and so is the style. A book for discoverers – grab it!’

5.0 out of 5 stars A Much Improved New Edition, December 29, 2008
I was unlucky enough to have to visit Mozambique with the previous edition of this book, which was (very poorly) updated by a different author and had numerous shortcomings.
Better late than never though, and I was surprised to see that in this new edition the original author Philip Briggs has once again produced a guide in line with the quality of his other titles on Africa.
Practical information is now much more thorough, and there is far more detail on wildlife and national parks. He has also successfully resisted Bradt's switch from giving only vague categories, if at all, to indicate rates of accommodation, and this book, like all others by this author, still gives you actual prices like LP.
I still feel the book is still a bit overly enthusiastic about what I personally found one of the least rewarding countries in the region though - I even found Mozambique's beaches far less impressive than guidebooks might lead you to believe.
The country's most unique feature in my eyes is its Portuguese colonial heritage, and that is well-introduced here.
I wish I had already had this edition with me on my trip!

The book contains a good overview of the history of Mozambique as well as useful hints for tourists in relation to money, customs, wildlife, etc. The provence by provence guide was very good.
