GRACE AND POWER ! THE MAGNIFICENT MITSUKO !!, October 14, 2005
This review is from: Mozart: 2 Sonatas (Audio CD)
Mitsuko Uchida, one of the PREMIER classical pianists of our time, presents this Mozart Sonata interpretation as a stunningly beautiful aural work of art. Ms Uchida produces breathtaking readings of each movement that are wonderous to behold. How someone so petite can wield such pianistic power and command of nuance is a wonderful mystery of the classical music world (or any musical world), known only to herself. Grace and Power, indeed!!
In particular, I am struck by her incandescent reading of Mozart's Sonata in A, K331 Theme and variations, going from fragile beauty to more robustness with each succeeding magnificent pass. And her reading of the K331 Turkish March (Rondo Alla Turca) is quite simply breathtaking and inspiring. No less wonderous is the Sonata in F, K332, the Adagio in particular, as well as the explosive propulsiveness of the Allegro assai, with it's surprising recapitulations. This is my morning music and it is invigorating to start the day in such a spectacular way.
To those who seem to want Ms Uchida to mimic other pianistic readings of famous classical works: not in her world! She has the firepower, technique and imagination to bring her own equally valid interpretations to the forefront. Indeed, her differences are a matter of nuance instead of literal changes and I enjoy them immensely. And for my money, Ms Uchida's work has become the standard, not the variance. After all, individual intrepretation makes the classical music world go 'round. Mozart would love this and you will too. Enjoy Mozart and the Magnificent Mitsuko. Five HUGE Stars!

Perfection, May 11, 2009
This review is from: Mozart: 2 Sonatas (Audio CD)
I'm a music lover and retired piano teacher who first heard Ms. Uchida a few years ago in a live performance at the annual music festival in Ojai, CA. What she does with these sonatas is pure magic. This recording should be in everyone's library even if you already have these sonatas by other pianists.
