Biography

Rivaled only by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Neville Marriner was one of the most important of the early figures who spearheaded the reawakening of modern interest in Baroque and early Classical music. In the 1950s, he founded Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the first British early music ensemble to find a large international audience. Marriner has since become one of the most popular conductors ... Read more in Amazon's Sir Neville Marriner Store

Simply put, Klaus Thunemann is the finest living Bassoonist. His flawless technique and well conceived

ornamentation is evident is this magnificent recording. If Mozart were alive he would rate this as five stars

plus. Add to this Karl Leister's beautiful tone and clarity in the Clarinet Concerto, and you have one

fantastic CD. Absolutely the finest coupling of both concertos ever done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of Knights and Shadows November 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I would not walk on broken glass or drink petrol or follow the Cleveland Browns in order to hear Sir Neville Marriner and the ASMF; nevertheless, he served Mozart honourably and at times with distinction. His 1984 recording of the Gran Partita is a spanker. Here is another such instance.

Karl Leister, former principal-clarinettist with the Berlin Phil, recorded K 622 with Kubelik and Karajan. This outing with Marriner surpasses these previous efforts. I cannot readily think of its better. Everything that one loves about the Clarinet Concerto - the celebration of energy as eternal delight, its realisation that transience has greater beauty than permanence, and the sovereignty of joy - is masterfully conveyed. There is nothing maudlin here and rightly so: "the balance trembles but the hand of the poet is steady." Catharsis ensues.

The magic is less pronounced in K 191, written lovingly by Mozart for this drollest of instruments. There is nothing wrong with the soloist - Klaus Thunemann - who is equal to the task and more. The Academy of St Martin in the Field, sad to say, reverts to its usual mundane self. Uncle Karl's performance of this endearing work is not unhorsed (Mozart: Wind Concertos).

The filler - the Sonata for Cello and Bassoon (K 292 / 196c) - is inconsequential in the scheme of things. It is well played.

Four stars apiece for K 191 and K 292, and a constellation for the Clarinet Concerto.

Our son is a new bassoon player and this has been excellent for him to listen to. The range of the bassoon is amazing and he has enjoyed hearing this.
