Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This is the earlier and fresher of two recordings of Mozart flute quartets by Jean-Pierre Rampal. In recent years, some of Rampal's performances and recordings have been so routine that they've obscured our memory of just how fine a player he was. This obviously was a fun session for the all-star ensemble that gathered to make the recording, with Alexander Schneider (from the great Budapest Quartet) making a rare appearance as violist. While you can't tell from the music that Mozart supposedly disliked the flute, none of these pieces is anywhere near his most profound. But they are Mozart and they are very well performed. --Leslie Gerber

I have gone to considerable expense to get hold of a CD of this album when I could no longer play my LP copy. The editorial review got it exactly right: This is a classical jam session. Enjoy!

This is just an excellent CD and what a price--$...! Rampal on flute, Stern on violin and Schneider and Rose complete the ensemble.
I especially love the Quartect in C major, Theme and Variations with the play between flute/violin combo and cello. Rose's performance here is magnificent.
Delightful, relaxing music.

This recording--the LP version--was my introduction to chamber music in the early '70s when I heard it being played in the antique dining room of Deetjen's Big Sur Inn. Grampa Deetjen was sitting at his little round table in the corner and this music wafted throughout. I cannot imagine four finer musicians coming together to form a flute quartet. Perfection. The LP launched me down the path of acquiring a great many chamber recordings. I bought the CD of this recording immediately when it came out, and purchased a backup just recently. Still my favorite chamber recording.

These admirable versions of Mozart flute strings are a minuscule part of his immense musical legacy. And despite the very little knowledge of their significance they really are neglected and little known for the most of the great audiences.

The presence of such notable musicians such Isaac Stern, leonard Rose and Jean Pierre Rampal justify widely this choice.

They are splendid and charming works filled with refined elegance and spontaneous lyricism.

By far, the best option in the market.
