Mozart Clarinet Concerto: Great Performances, Robert Marcellus, February 22, 2007
This review is from: Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, K.622 / Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola, & Orchestra, K.364 / Szell / Cleveland Orchestra / Robert Marcellus (CBS Great Performances) (Audio CD)
If you require a reference recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, this is it! This is a slightly older recording, but the understated elegence of Robert Marcellus makes this recording of the Mozart one each clarinet student, performer, and classical music lover should own. I consider, as others do, an essential part of one's classical music collection.

amazing - done in one take!, July 20, 2010
This review is from: Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, K.622 / Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola, & Orchestra, K.364 / Szell / Cleveland Orchestra / Robert Marcellus (CBS Great Performances) (Audio CD)
This is an amazing recording. I studied clarinet with a woman who was Robert Marcellus' student. She told me that the Mozart Concerto on this recording was from a single take. It was not several bits spliced together. It's really my favorite recording of this piece.

Sheer Perfection, November 24, 2011
This review is from: Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, K.622 / Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola, & Orchestra, K.364 / Szell / Cleveland Orchestra / Robert Marcellus (CBS Great Performances) (Audio CD)
There is not a finer interpretation of this masterpiece than the Marcellus/Szell/Cleveland recording. Originally performed and then recorded in October of 1961 and then issued on EPIC records in 1962, it has been the only recording of this work to consistently stay in the catalog for 50 years. It instantly became the standard by which all successive recordings of this greatest of clarinet concertos were compared. The quality of the ensemble playing supporting Marcellus' exquisite phrasing and liquid gold timbre have now become a relic of the past - unequalled in it's interpretive style and technical mastery thanks to the guidance of George Szell. Truly one of those performances that makes one sit up on first listening and exclaim, "Wow!". There may be a whole host of "trickier" and "fancier" recordings out there that rely more on scholarship and "original style" to sell their wares, but nothing even comes close to the sublime music making that endures to this day with this recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto by Robert Marcellus, George Szell, and The Cleveland Orchestra.
