Dark and Serious Don Giovanni, December 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Mozart: Don Giovanni (Audio CD)
Charles Rosen has pointed out that Mozart can be performed elegantly and superficially, or in a way that brings out the dark complexities of his music. This album definitely belongs in the latter category. Siepi was a great Don Giovanni, and in the absence of the Krips album (London) from the catalog this is one of the best places to hear him. The rest of the cast is wonderful, especially Schwarzkopf, Gruemmer, and Dermota. This is the most serious interpretation of the score imaginable. The recorded sound is adequate, but not much more. My copy lacks an English translation, so in addition to this you might want one of the versions that provides that (such as Giulini (EMI) or Fricsay (DG) or the new Solti (London), in descending order).
