5.0 out of 5 stars Peter Damm -- a musician's horn player, October 25, 2000
By
This review is from: Mozart: The Horn Concertos (Audio CD)
Peter Damm has one of the most resonant sounds in the business. His artistry is truly masterful, transcending technique. Don't be put off by his use of vibrato (unfamiliar to American ears) -- listen to his sound and phrasing. If you enjoy his performance, check out his Strauss recordings, available on a dual-cd set of the Dresden Symphony performing works of Strauss (EMI).

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't figure why you wouldn't like Peter Damm, July 25, 2010

I heard this on the radio so I don't know about recording or balance but Peter Damm always seemed like transcendent horn player. His use of vibrato is what gives his playing its singing quality and voice-like flow. I agree with the first review that the Strauss recordings are great even in side by side comparison with Hermann Baumann who is also one of the great horn players. I might re-listen for what bothered the 2nd review but right now this seems like the ultimate.

1.0 out of 5 stars This recording is Damm'ed!, February 20, 2008
This review is from: Mozart: The Horn Concertos (Audio CD)
In my opinion this is the worst set and recording of the Mozart's Horn Concertos I've heard yet.

Marriner is excruciating mundane and boring, that I can't believe it's the same Marriner that did amazing sets with Tuckwell and Civil!

Peter Damm is pretty superficial, plain and boring. His use of vibrato is also quite annoying. He doesn't showcase the horn, the works or Mozart!

Also, the digital recording totally lacks body and brilliance these pieces need. The horn is as loud as the orchestra, and the orchestra instruments are equalized on the same level...nothing jumps out at you! (And I'm listening on audiophile equipment!)

I try to stay away from this recording, and I hope you only compare versions to realize the truth I'm telling you.
