Conductor Ferenc Fricsay was a formidable Mozartian, and his honesty, conviction and above all profound devotion to Mozart has rarely been equaled on disk. Indeed, his historic 1950 (mono) recording of The Magic Flute, the recipient of a well-deserved Penguin Guide rosette, remains one of the treasures of the back catalogue. If his 1960 recording of Le Nozze Di Figaro (in stereo) doesn't rise to quite the level of Der Zauberflote, he can be forgiven, as very few recordings of any type ever have. This is still a distinctive and highly rewarding portrayal of what many consider to be Mozart's finest opera. If Fricsay's tempi are a bit eccentric (and fast) at times, they are nevertheless done with impulse, dynamism and sympathy with the music and the singers. This recording on the Australian Eloquence label has been newly remastered, with generally propitious results. While the sound may be a bit "hot" at the high-end for some tastes, revealing a slight, but not objectionable amount of tape hiss (this was 1960, before noise reduction methods came into widespread use), that's just fine with me. I much prefer to hear a little Golden Age of Stereo tape hiss than to have all of the highs and ambience of the music digitally "no-noised" out of existence along with the tape hiss, which seems to be the dominant trend at the major EU labels nowadays. In short, I'm very happy to have this long forgotten recording in my music library, and I think you will be equally happy as well.
