4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended For Those with a Thirst for Good Articulation, March 10, 2005
This review is from: Mozart: The Music for Piano Duet (Audio CD)

Eschenbach is clearly a wizard of the keyboard and one just can't help falling in love with his Bach and his Czerny ... just to name a few.

His approach is classical and rightly so. While they have every regard to the scores, there is no compromise of spontaneity. And as a matter of style, his playing is more German than Viennese. And even though there isn't too much pathos in his reading as such, his playing nonetheless brings out the darker side of Mozart very well. The remastered sound is however just above average.

Recommended especially for the beginners/intermediate pianists with a keen interest for good articulation. For the general music lovers, it is likely that they will find the more romantic approach of Ingrid Haebler (Philips) with fuller use of rubato, stronger contracts and plentiful of nuances, and above all, with a better recorded sound more to their taste. Nonetheless, one should also point out that Eschenbach had obviously chosen a perfect partner in these pieces, more so than perhaps Haebler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable record in your collection!, August 17, 2011
This review is from: Mozart: The Music for Piano Duet (Audio CD)

This double album encloses the culmination of a long expected dream: to gather the complete music for piano duet of the beloved genius of Salzburg. For many people who loves Mozart this genre still remains unknown by unexplainable reasons.

These treasured and beloved works contain that febrile flair, enraptured inspiration, amazing serenity and egregious oneness so typical of Mozart. Listen for instance the geniality of Andante and Five variations in G major K. 501 or the mesmerizing charm of Sonata for two pianos K. 448 ( whose marked spirit of Symphonic flight is more than evident)

But what it should be remarked : the colossal approach given by Eschenbach and Franz ,rivalries with the legendary and historical duos for piano in the past (Badura-Skoda and Demus, Eden and Tamir, Walter and Beatriz Klien,) and the well known ones of the present such as the team Argerich- Freire, Lupu-Perahia, Lupu-Barenboim or Lechner- Tempo.

This approach, plenty of idiomatic expression, radiant vitality, overwhelming musicality and inimitable panache make it to my view an undisputed acquisition, as well an undeniable golden crown in your collection. Go for it. You will always be amazed and rewarded.
