4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Bargain, September 21, 2008
By
This review is from: Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (Audio CD)
The Marriage of Figaro is, for me at least, The perfect opera. It has every thing - Drama, Comedy, Sex and above all Mozart's music. In addition, like Puccini's La Boheme, it is difficult to give a really bad performance of the work. This set,however, is very special for two reasons;
1. It is a real bargain!! 3Cds for basically the price of 1.
2.The performance is excellent and contains nearly all the variations Mozart added and the sound is....well.. its Telarc!
Sir Charles Mackerras recorded the Da Ponte - Mozart Operas (+ Magic Flute) for Telarc in the mid- nineties. Telarc seems to be releasing them at bargain prices.All are vibrant performancs using most interesting period performance practices. Can you find better sung performances? Of course. A more luxurious orchestral sound? You bet! However here is an historically informed performance containing all the later additions by Mozart (in a recorded appendix) that is both musically and dramatically very very satisfying and for basement bargain price. What are you waiting for? Wall street to collapse?

4.0 out of 5 stars great!, August 29, 2011

This review is from: Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (Audio CD)
A must buy for purists & the curious: Great value for money, great voices. Yes startling at 1st because used to established recordings w kiri te kenawa & jessye Norman, but this quickly sweeps you:
There are pleasant surprises like the tremulous & sensual voi che sapete, or the following un moto di gioia, & Al Desio, all in D3. Plus the great bonus of alternative renditions/scorings of a number of arias.
