Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Philip S. Griffey on January 29, 2012
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Very fine nuanced performances of three of Mozart's most charming pieces. The Adagio of the Quartet in F major KV 370: for Oboe, Violin, Viola & Violoncello is played in an especially lyrical manner. (Note - the quality of the audio on the samples is not very good; the quality on the disc is excellent - warm and focused.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Bernard Michael O'Hanlon on July 20, 2013
Format: Audio CD
Here they are - three centurions from the Legion Vast; Lothar Koch, Gerd Seifert and Karl Leister, backed up by their buddy Thomas Brandis and his mates from the string-section of the Berlin Philharmonic. Over time, how many of Herbie's recordings did they enliven? It is disappointing in a way to see photographs of them; hitherto they had led a platonic existence in my mind. To the last, they're going the way of all flesh.

Mozart is no country for old men - or is it? Yeats tells us that

An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress.

Such is the case here: iridescent with sunset, these master-musicians reckon themselves against this imperishable, ever-now music and are not found wanting in balance. They radiate the joy of creation. Mozart's kaleidoscopic interplay of emotions is well captured. One almost forgets to breathe in the second last variation of K 581's finale where Mozart envisages the eventual heat-death of the universe.

Nimbus defies its DNA to record them in a non-cavernous acoustic and superbly so.

No-one steps twice into the same river. Get wet one last time with our friends.
