Buy this disc if you can't abide the Mozart sonatas Gould recorded. Here is a broody, intense reading digging as deep into this masterpiece as you're likely to hear. The recording is clear and well balances, with the vivid CBC woodwind engaging in dialogue with the inspired Gould. Why Gould had such issues with Mozart thoughout his career yet could play this concerto like an angel is a mystery. I think the C minor appealed very much to his sense of logic and order in music, and particularly its prophetic echos of Beethoven 3rd concerto. There are a lot of outstanding Mozart discs around at the moment, but even by Gould's exhaulted standards, this one is very special and stamped with that unique Gould magic.

As GG says, "Music is a malleable art, acquiescent and philosophically flexible."

Compare this 1958 realization of K.330 with the 1970 performance in the complete sonata set: this one is almost 10 mins. longer! Remarkable.
