During the early 1990s, Irish pianist John O'Conor and the legendary conductor Sir Charles Mackerras made a number of recordings for Telarc, with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, of nine Mozart piano concertos (17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23,24, 25, & 27) that, while they may not have necessarily been revelatory, were nevertheless excellently crafted, and among the best that the particular concertos in question had received in their time. This particular recording is of perhaps best known of all of Mozart's keyboard concertos, and his final one.

The C Major concerto, No. 21, is a quintessential work not only in the arena of the piano concerto as Mozart imagined it, but a pivotal work in that entire field. Framed by lively and energetic outer movements, which make prominent use of trumpets and timpani and allow for pianistic virtuosity, the inner slow movement of this concerto was elevated to "big hit" status in 1967, when Swedish director Bo Widerberg utilized it in his romantic movie ELVIRA MADIGAN. Not surprisingly, that is the (admittedly anachronistic) nickname this concerto has because of its cinematic use. The 27th, in B Flat Major, omits trumpets and timpani, and was the last of the concertos that Mozart composed for the piano (he premiered it in early 1791, just ten months before his untimely demise). The work is shot through not only with virtuosity, but also with a certain kind of poignancy.

All the elements of these two concertos are bought out by O'Conor, Mackerras, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble very familiar with the works of the wunderkinder from Salzburg. This is what, for me, makes this Telarc recording well worth having, even if you already have other recordings of these concertos in your collection.

...this CD just doesn't quite brew up the magic of a WAM concerto. Just my opinion. O'Conor is fantastic with the LVB 32 sonatas. He helped me to fall in love with music all over again with that cycle. Astonishing touch - of joy, wonderful rhythms, and fluidity. Still, it takes real luck, skill, and sound engineering (etc.) to pull off these WAM pieces. The greats can always have a CD that just doesn't cohere. I give O'Conor's LVB 32 about 20 stars...and this CD a 3.

Maybe try Brendel/Marriner for great Mozart chemistry.
