This cd provides yet another invaluable insight into the musical legacy of Mozart. Like every other Naxos recording I own, the sound quality is excellent, as are the vibrant performances of these classic quartets. Mozart composed such a huge quantity of music during his brief lifetime that many of his smaller, chamber pieces have been overshadowed by the mind-blowing piano concertos, symphonies, and of course, operas. But these compositions are still very interesting. Nos. 156, 158, 159 were written during the early 1770s, when Mozart was quickly blossoming into a very promising composer. In these works you can hear the dynamics that he instilled in his early symphony no 25 in g minor in 1774. No. 458 was written a decade later in 1785, when Mozart had matured into the most talented composer of his era, and perhaps, of all time. The adagio of this particular quartet is really gorgeous---one of those pieces so striking that if you turned on the radio and heard it, you'd know immediately it was Mozart. This cd will be a welcome addition to any classical collection.

This disc is a very good one...The quality is amazing and the musicians perform the quartets really well, I especially like "The Hunt" K.458. All are performed with extreme caution and sentiment...

I don't pretend to be an expert on classical music but I know what sounds just right. The Eder Quartet capture the essence of Mozart in this series of string quartets. The sound quality is full and it feels as if the quartet is playing right in front of you. This was recorded in a church in Budapest which gives the music a broader, more open sound than if it was recorded in a smaller room. There's much to be said for pure chamber music of course, but this setting works extremely well.

Since this was an excellent introductory CD for me I recommend it to others who wish to explore Mozart. It's hard to go wrong with this recording.
