This review is from: Mozart: String quartets K. 465 "Dissonance", K. 458 "The Hunt" & K. 421 (Audio CD)
Bravo! An inspired performance of brilliant works can leave you breathless. This is one. Spirited, masterful, and exceptionally well balanced, this excellent recording reflects the passion of musician and engineer alike. Remember, too, that many great recordings of these quartets exist: To truly appreciate the classics it is essential to listen to interpretations by various artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, original, and insightful playing from one of today's finest chamber ensembles, January 3, 2007

This review is from: Mozart: String quartets K. 465 "Dissonance", K. 458 "The Hunt" & K. 421 (Audio CD)
The Emerson String Quartet does not disappoint with its contributions to the classical period of string quartets. These well-known works sound entirely fresh, while remaining stylistically delightful. This disc is wonderful from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent CD, December 4, 2007

These three string quartets are some of the most beautiful pieces of classical chamber music ever written. They are densely filled with emotions, including deep sadness, angst, and happiness.

String Quartet in C Major (K. 465) is one of my absolute favorites. Its angst-ridden adagio introduction at the beginning of the first movement coupled with the subsequent transition into the brightness of C major is especially beautiful.

The Emerson String Quartet did a magnificent job with this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic of the CD era, February 4, 2007

This review is from: Mozart: String quartets K. 465 "Dissonance", K. 458 "The Hunt" & K. 421 (Audio CD)
This disc was one of the first classical discs I ever bought. Loved it then and I love it now. This version includes a extra work which is also rewarding. The Emerson String Quartet combine a strength of performance at the same time giving us subtle shades of color producing one of the supreme recordings of chamber music ever. Enthusiastic and sensitive interpretations rolled into one.

This is a beautiful CD. The recording is crisp and clear as a bell, and the Emerson performs with grace and feeling three of the greatest by the greatest. K. 421, is IMO, one of Mozart's finest works. Full of gorgeous melodies, invention, variations (of which he was the supreme master), it makes you think of the quote by a famous violinist (I forget who), "Never have I heard so much great music in so short a time!" It out-Ludwigs Ludwig in its passion and fury. The Emerson Quartet does a bang-up job playing/interpreting this masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intimate Mozart, a Revelation, November 21, 2009

This review is from: Mozart: String quartets K. 465 "Dissonance", K. 458 "The Hunt" & K. 421 (Audio CD)
Mozart's orchestral works are familiar friends, but his String Quartets are, perhaps, less often performed. The Emerson String Quartet has recorded three of the six String Quartets that Mozart dedicated to Haydn, and the group has made us a wonderful gift. This is one record I will want to play often, as the sound quality is great, even on my old stereo equuipment. A wonderful opportunity to become better acquainted with Mozart in a more intimate setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this CD., March 29, 2009
This review is from: Mozart: String quartets K. 465 "Dissonance", K. 458 "The Hunt" & K. 421 (Audio CD)
I love this CD, especially "Dissonance". The performance is great with clearly defined crisp sound. I like the texture of viola and cello in this CD. It seems more I listen to it, I find more and more parts I really enjoy.
It is like one of those gourmet dish, I find many layers of surprisingly delicious flavors.
