This review is from: Mozart: Violin Concertos 3 & 4 / Eine kleine Nachtmusik / Walter (Audio CD)
As someone who has only recently begun seriously collecting classical CDs, the Bruno Walter Edition has been a revelation. Most of the titles in this series feature Walter's so-called "Indian Summer" recordings with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, where he laid down stereo performances of his signature pieces for posterity. On this CD you get classic performances from 1958 of Mozart's 3rd and 4th Violin Concertos with the great Zino Francescatti. These two concertos are very much the equal of more celebrated recordings by Stern, Menuhin and Grumiaux. And if that wasn't enough already, this CD concludes with one of the great mono performances of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, recorded in 1954. I should conclude by saying that since making a point of acquiring all of the Bruno Walter Edition titles earlier this year, I have witnessed several of them falling prey to silent deletion. So order the Bruno Walter Edition titles quickly, because these recordings made during the twilight of Walter's career, seem to be in the twilight of their own life as well.
