MOST MEMORABLE MOZART,
By Melvyn M. Sobel "Melvyn M. Sobel" (Freeport, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mozart: Violin Sonatas (Audio CD)
Time, for once, has been kind; the classic, and very much classical, Mozart collaboration between Karl Suske and Walter Olbertz is as telling today as it was when first released on vinyl in 1972, and analogous to their superb recording of the Beethoven violin sonatas of 1969. Indeed, their approach, in the best possible sense, is openly direct, yet amiable; outer movements are delightfully rough and ready, while the contemplative cores never abandon reflection or wisdom. The uncanny clarity of both harmony and melodic line is positively refreshing to hear, as is a violin both crisp and sweet, with wonderful intonation, tangible piano sound, and both instruments superbly captured in a lifelike, intimate acoustic; it's like listening to these pieces anew. Arresting, too, is the inspired transformation of performance, from early sonatas to late, as the music gains in profundity; since the sonatas are mercifully presented in chronological order and because of the exceptional artistic strategy of Suske and Olbertz, the observation of Mozart's maturing genius is breathtaking and transparent. As distinct bonuses are the inclusion of Mozart's two sets of variations for violin and piano from 1781 (K. 359 and 360) and the fascinating sonata fragments of 1782 (K. 402 and 403, with final movements completed by Mozart's student, Maximilian Stadler, and K. 404, known as the Andante and Allegretto for Violin and Piano), all imminently delectable and rewarding. The reissuing of this set confirms the extraordinary artistry of these highly under-rated musicians and has been long in coming; it is more than merely an excellent contender in a field strewn with many whose accolades may not be as worthy.

I think this is a pleasant listening experience with clean, clear, fresh, and joyful playing. At times, the playing almost sounds like period instruments are being used. Well worth consideration.
