5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT MULTI-PURPOSE BOOK. LEARNING SCIENCE CAN BE FUN!, April 20, 2011
This review is from: Mr. Archimedes' Bath (Picture Puffins) (Paperback)
This wonderful, multipurpose children's book was first published in1980 and is one of a long line of outstanding children's books from our cousins down under. This work has gone through several printings and has wonderful staying power simply because it is good and it is extremely useful in the classroom!

First, the story is very loosely based on the story or legend about the Greek scholar Archimedes who supposedly was the first to understand that (we are told, true or not that Archimedes was taking a bath at the time) the volume of water displaced must be equal to the volume of what ever is submerged in it...it this case it was the old Greek's body. I have used rock, marbles, coins, and other such stuff along with a bucket of water to demonstrate this over the years but I must say that reading this work to the little ones first makes the lesson much better and much more understandable...or at least more entertaining than any words I can come up with.

Mr. Archimedes takes a bath with is friends which include a number of cute, in an odd sort of way, and his goat. They are having a grand time but alas...the bathwater keeps overflowing! Why oh why is this happening? It would seem that someone is secretly adding water all during the bath as Mr. Archimedes is joined by one friend after another!

The illustrations in this are quite good. The lesson taught and learned is quite clever and the book holds the interest of the children quite well. The text is comprised of short lines of a cumulative and repetitive nature. They are quite humorous, and when you combine the text with the expressive illustrations you come up with a real winner here.

This is an excellent book to add to your school's library and indeed, your child's collection of books.

I chose this book to read to my preschool class during our summer school water theme. The story teaches about displacement, measurement, and making hypotheses. It is an entertaining and informative story based on fact.
