5.0 out of 5 stars Brutally funny, October 22, 2009
This review is from: Mr. Art Critic (DVD)
MJ Clayton is an arrogant art critic that the art community loathes. He writes mean-spirited reviews even though he himself has never painted a picture. When he goes to the breathtaking historical island of Mackinac for a vacation, he drunkenly accepts a challenge from an artist he had recently dissed, to enter a painting of his own in an art contest. When he discovers he can't paint at all, he must come up with a plan quickly to save face. What will MJ Clayton do?!!!

How can I not love a film where the main character announces that he could paint a better picture than most artists by clenching a paint brush between his gluteal cheeks? Bronson Pinchot is dry humored and witty in this film and makes the character enough of a jerk at the start of the movie that you just want to strangle him. That is the essence of character acting!

4.0 out of 5 stars A subtle comedy..., October 15, 2009

which I enjoyed very much. The story centers on M.J. Clayton (Bronson Pinchot), an arrogant art critic known for his mean-spirited reviews. Convinced that any idiot can create art, M.J. enters into an ill-conceived bar bet with an artist whose work he has trashed. He must create a piece of art worthy of the local juried art show. What follows is a series of dishonesties which ultimately lead to M.J.'s redemption. This is not a comedy that will have you rolling on the floor, but there are a number of really funny moments, and Pinchot's portrayal of the pompous M.J. (there are moments when you just want to slap him) gradually discovering that he's really not such a bad fellow is worth the price of admission.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good movie!, January 24, 2010
This review is from: Mr. Art Critic (DVD)
It's been an absolute pleasure to watch this movie.

Even if you're not exactly into arts, this movie (directed by Richard Brauer) is very entertaining, smart and funny- it's a delightful change from the rather mindless mainstream movies that have come out lately.

The cast of "Mr Art Critic" is doing an extremely good job and seems very well-chosen to me.

Leading actor Bronson Pinchot is brilliant and convincing in this movie, he plays the art critic M.J. Clayton with subtle humor and gives a great performance while never exaggerating the part, which makes this movie so enjoyable.

Toni Trucks, who plays alongside Pinchot as a talented young artist, contributes to this believability, as her acting comes across as very natural and effortless.

Actor John Lepard portrays the third main character, a sculptor whose work has been bashed by one of M.J. Clayton's infamous reviews and who now wants to see if the art critic can live up to his own high standards.

Make sure you watch the "Behind the Scenes" feature on the DVD too, which gives some interesting insights in how the film was shot on beautiful Mackinac Island in Michigan.
