Mr. Beams MB542 Remote Controlled Battery Powered Motion Sensing LED Path Light 2-Pack Features

Attach a Path Light anywhere: on your sidewalk, steps, yard, front porch, in your garden and more. The MB542 from Mr. Beams can be wall mounted or can mount to a stake that can be driven into the ground. Mr. Beams offers simple installation with no wiring and no electrician needed. Runs on 3 C batteries (not included).

Mr. Beams LED lights provide indoor and outdoor lighting solutions where you need them most. Intelligent motion-sensors activate battery-operated LED lights for hands-free lighting. All units are IP44 rated, which means the weatherproof design will satisfy both indoor and outdoor LED light applications. All Mr. Beams LED lights install easily--no wiring, no electricians--so you can be assured of quality LED lighting anywhere.

Remote Controlled Path Light Features

Motion or Remote Control Activation

The Mr. Beams Path Light instantly turns on when it detects motion, and can detect motion from as far as 12 feet away with 180 degrees of vision. Or use the included remote control to turn the light on and off. The remote control operates the entire group of path lights using radio frequency (RF) control. It does not require line of sight thus you can turn the Path Lights on and off from inside your house or at a distance beyond the range of the motion sensors. A built-in photocell activates the remote control receiver and motion sensor only after the sun has set or when the lights are out. The Path Light turns off automatically when no motion is detected, conserving battery life. The automatic shut-off period is adjustable using a switch to select between 20 seconds or five minutes of delay from the last motion that was detected or last remote control ON received to shutting the light off.

Bright LED Light and Glow Mode

The bright LED and housing design focus the light where you need it--perfect for wall-mounted or ground-installed lighting applications. The LED never needs replacing. It’s so efficient that you will get more than 5,200 activations on one set of batteries with the auto shut-off set to 20 seconds.

The Path Light also has a glow mode option. In glow mode, the LED light will remain turned on at a very low light level. At the very low light level, the light serves as a marker light identifying where the sidewalk or deck stairs start, for example. When a user approaches, the motion sensor will turn the light on to a bright light output to provide more light. After the auto shut-off time in which motion has not been detected, the MB542 will return to LED glow mode.

Easy to Install

The MB542 from Mr. Beams is a battery-powered, wireless, remote control and motion-sensor activated LED path light that requires no wiring. Simply insert batteries and attach to a wall or to a stake that can be driven into the ground. The unit is designed such that you can mount it in a convenient location and it won’t get in your way. These are fantastic and bright stair and path LED lights for decks, stairways, steps, gardens, sidewalks, closets, garages, alleys, patios, yards and sheds.

Path Light Applications and Key Features

Fall Prevention

Inadequate lighting is a leading cause of unintentional injuries due to falls around the house. The MB542 Path Light can reduce the likelihood of falls by illuminating stairs and walkways. The LED glow mode operates all the time to provide a marker light for someone to know, for example, where the sidewalk, pathway or stairs start. When someone gets close enough, the motion detector will turn the light on brightly to offer real path or stair lighting to light up the walkway.

Everyone loves these 3 "C" cell powered motion lights when they see them. They provide just the right amount of light spread and brightness. What's also great is the fact that you can customize how you want these lights to operate: light for 20 seconds or five (5) minutes, no problem! Glow at night or no glow, sure =)

I have my few sets of Mr. Beams 542s set to 20 seconds with no glow to preserve battery life.

This nice little light does what it is supposed to do reliably, that is, it illuminates for a short period whenever its sensor detects motion and the ambient light is sufficiently low, e.g., at night. I've got several installed alongside the dark walkway to my front door. The only shortfall in their design is the apparent hyper-sensitivity of the sensor. I find that the lights will come on for the slightest motion nearby, e.g., blades of grass or leaves waving in the breeze. To me, this is more amusing that annoying, although it may shorten the battery life a bit. Absent this, the MB 542 would earn an easy five stars.

Bought these to light our outdoor path that goes to a separate Basement Apt. EASY to install, the light is bright at night, and our Tenant loves the Remote Control that came with them. The body is hard plastic, which was surprising, but they've held up well, even when I whack them with the garden hose accidentally. Good value for the price.

I have Mr. Beams stick anywhere lights. Love them.
So based on that and some reviews here thought I'd try these as path lights.

Ended up returning them.
Motion sensor didn't activate until within 2-3 feet.
At a normal walking speed means you're on top of the lights before they turn on.
That was the deal breaker and since all 4 lights worked the same it wasn't a defective unit.

Review of way light works:
There's 2 slide switches located in the battery compartment behind the batteries.
One switch is to set how long the light stays on. Choice is 30 seconds or 5 minutes.
2nd switch is to turn the dim glow feature on/off.
You have to remove the battery compartment cover (2 screws) to reach the switches.

The remote will turn the lights on for the amount of time set by the switch.
If the lights are already on the remote will turn them off until they sense motion again.
Range of the remote was about 35ft.

With the provided stakes bottom of the light is about 7 inches above ground.
At that height it only lights up 8 ft of the path (4 ft on each side of the light).

Lights work better higher up, at least 4 ft. But then they're not really path lights, don't look nice at that height and have to figure a way to mount them.

1 remote didn't work, the second 1 did.
Appearently that happens a bit and they'll send you a new remote.
Didn't check that out since returned everything.

I live in Northwest Montana with a lot of winter dark, a driveway that is 175 yards long and 8 acres of woods...and a dog! I originally bought these lights as a person unused to my property was house-sitting and I thought to provide a bit of extra light on the driveway. I mounted the lights about 5 feet high on trees by the driveway so they would be out of the way of snowblower/plow and deep snow. Additionally, I used some roofing material to fashion small roofs for a bit of protection from snow and rain. They have now been up and doing their job for 3 1/2 months on the first set of batteries. This winter has been relatively mild - I would expect during a normal winter, to go through at least 2 sets of batteries. Bottom line, I am very happy with how these operate, with their durabilty and with the price. I am purchasing more for both the driveway and a few spots in the woods where I walk with my dog...in winter our morning and evening walk is in the dark and these lights are much easier on the eyes adjusting than a flashlight.

These lights take 3 "C" batteries and have great sensors and put out sufficient light for side-walk; the ONLY problem, is occasionally the weather seals fail; as in prolonged, heavy rains, water can enter the unit, and if not caught soon enough, the batteries corrode; the contacts rust; and, the lights stop working.

I purchased a 2-pack of these. The idea of being battery powered is great, but I have two issues with the product.

First, it focuses its light almost directly down. Mounted on its stake in the ground its light is intense on a spot just below the unit. I tilt mine back to spread the light more. For me, the best light spreading for this unit happens when the unit is several feet up off the ground, but I prefer it mounted low to the ground as a path light. I would like to see the reflector redesigned to spread the light more.

Second, the unit I was using as a path light failed after about two months. One night I noticed it was on continually, and I couldn't get it to go back to on-off operation. I replaced it with the second one, which has been working since I installed it three weeks ago.

I gave it two stars because it is a great idea, but needs some improvement to make it a good product.

UPDATE: I am increasing my rating from a 2 to a 4 because of the great customer service the Mr Beams company provided me. They were very interested in my problem and in my thoughts on its performance. They sent me a replacement unit, free of charge. They also provided me an easy postage paid way to return the item that failed so they can examine it to understand why it failed.

Clearly the company is very interested in providing a good product and pleasing their customers. I did not go to a 5 on the rating, since I not sure that the units will hold up. Time will tell.

Be careful when you replace the batteries not to disturb the cover's gasket. When I changed the batteries (to test to see if it was a battery issue) somehow the gasket came out of its track. I tried for many minutes to get it back in, but I was unsuccessful. Therefore this is a third issue.
