5.0 out of 5 stars My Mom Loves It
After looking for this book on the internet and used bookstores for the past two years - and finding that the cheapest auctions were selling the original 1950's version off in the $300 range, I can't tell you how happy I was to find this anniversary reprint. I don't know much about it, and I don't know that this review will help anyone, but all I can say is my mom went...

2.0 out of 5 stars Just mean, and lacks a moral
Bought book because of rave reviews. Not sure what all the fuss is about. The bear character is just mean with no redeeming qualities. He eventually goes away because he is not successful in his squashing. What's the moral in that story? Meaness sometimes fails to cause the intended damage? The little woodland creatures are just hapless and passive victims of a bully...

I don't know much about it, and I don't know that this review will help anyone, but all I can say is my mom went nuts when I gave it to her. If you have a Baby Boomer in your life that had this book as a kid, they'll love to see it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! - Mr. Bear Squash-You-All-Flat is back!, December 30, 2000

My brother and I have been searching for this book for 25 years. I began to think we had imagined the book until I heard Gary Larson talk about it in an interview. Like Mr. Larson, my brother loved to have it read over and over. (I did finally find an original one on the internet for $800!) The new book is as great as we remembered and was my favorite Christmas surprise. Thanks Amazon for making it available and easy to get.

There are some childhood memories that you cherish forever. This book is one of them.

As young children in Sackets Harbor, New York, my sister and I borrowed this book from the local library almost every week. When we were four and five we moved to Long Island. The librarian said to us -"You girls take this book - you loved it so." and we did love this book.

I found a copy through a children's book search and gave it to my sister for her 50th birthday. I could not have given her a better present.

This week, she sent me the 50th Anniversary edition, she got from Amazon. It touched my heart and soul more than I could imagine. The illustrations, especially the one with the bear running away are wonderful. Just saying "squash-you-all-flat" would make us giggle.

It warms my heart now that I have my own copy again. I think we always were glad the little guys were able to fend off the big bad bear in the end.

I hope a new generation can find a special place in their hearts for this story as we did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cherished Memories, October 18, 2001

This was my favorite book as a child. I looked for 15 years for this book and finally found a bookstore who knew what I was talking about. I asked that they find the book. One year passed and I got a call saying they were trying to find the book for me and were not sure they could find one in good condition. That was in October and I had been saving my quarters to pay for the book. I did not hear anything from them and on Christmas morning I opened my gifts and there was the book Mr.Bear Squash You All Flat. My husband got the call that the book had been found and bought it for me. I am a principal in an elementary school and read the story to the children and we talk about the language in the book, such as Neighborhood Nusiance, harms way and Modern. It really does lend to a lot of discussion. My version is the 1950 edition, but I am buying the new version for my grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite story!, March 1, 2003

My grandma used to read this one to me over and over. I'm now 58 and can't wait to read it to my grandkids. I've been looking for it in flea markets and used book stores and was pleased to find it in print again. It will sure result in a lot of giggles and fun if you read it to your little one.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Heart Danced With Joy !, April 26, 2002

Of all the books I read to my children so long ago, I never forgot this book. I loved reading it and seeing the fun my children had as I read it. That grouchy old bear is a reminder that even though we may not always feel happy, we can't take it out on others. The story was told in such a gentle way, that, even as we closed the book, we could still smile about Mr. Bear. I was so happy to find that the book had been reprinted. I ordered two copies, and when they arrived in the mail today, I was overjoyed. As I opened the box, I felt as though I was seeing an old friend after many, many years. Thank you Amazon for making it so easy to order, and to receive it in such a short time. This was my first time to buy something on the internet, but now, I have plans to order this book for all my children and their children! Holding this book in my hands, is like holding a cherished memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars And there was the book, the same as ever!, January 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mr. Bear Squash-You-All-Flat (Hardcover)
Woo HOO! In Publishers Weekly I saw that this was back in print. I have 2 disintegrating copies -- the original beloved of the six of us from childhood, and another that I grabbed at a garage sale. The image of that cross old bear padding along in the moonlight is unforgettable, and the expression, "And there was the tire, the same as ever", I have laughingly used throughout my life when faced with something that prevailed, no matter what. And to hear our mum read aloud about that "very large and very stupid bear," when the word "stupid" was a no-no in our household -- oooh, edgy! but somehow fond and right. The story conveys compassion for a dimwitted bully who lumbers away unable to do damage, while the meek inherit the earth. Yes!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ahhh, childhood long ago!, June 12, 2002
This review is from: Mr. Bear Squash-You-All-Flat (Hardcover)
This is my husband's favorite book from his childhood. It's such a nice story, and the soft illustrations are so 50's, so PERFECT! Mr. Bear likes to squash everything all flat, so the other forest animals don't want him around. They work together to solve the problem. Kids love the ending.

I've wanted to get a copy of this most favorite childhood book for over 20 years. Could never find one in the condition I wanted at a price I could pay.

Imaging my glee when I found out today that this has been reprinted!!! Can't wait for it to arrive.
