Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Mr. Bear and his family are back, and this time they take their tent and set off on an adventure. After the weather turns chilly and their moth-eaten tent is visited by a frightening "monster" calling "Moo!," the bears head for home. Bright, watercolor illustrations on double-page spreads feature cartoon-style bears with wonderfully expressive faces. Each picture has details for observant children, from a teapot with a bear-shaped knob on the lid to the cows in the distance when the bear family selects its camping site. Preschoolers and their parents will recognize much of the adult-child interplay ("Are we there yet?"), although the conclusion that the family needs another vacation to recover from this one will fly over the heads of most listeners. Nevertheless, the warm illustrations and understated text will allow children to meet a secure and loving family that experiences an adventure close to home.

From Booklist

When her friends, the Grizzle-Bears, send her a postcard from their vacation, Small Bear decides she, too, wants to take a trip. But Mr. Bear thinks an adventure is more in order. The Bear family sets off on what turns out to be an accident-filled camping trip. What's refreshing about this sequel to Mr. Bear's New Baby (1999) is Gliori's characterization of the bears: they are definitely not perfect. When Small Bear is tired, she's whiny and impatient. When Mr. Bear is tired, he snaps at the family. What's more, the Bears' home is as messy and chaotic as any home with two small children in it. The bright watercolor illustrations add to the gentle, familiar feel of the story. Marta Segal

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mr. Bear stories are endearing and will appeal to young children, January 8, 2011
This review is from: Mr. Bear's Vacation (Hardcover)
I came across the Mr. Bear series of books at our local library and promptly checked them out. All of the books in the series are lavishly illustrated in color and have engaging story lines. In this title, Mr. Bear decides to take his family on a vacation - in the great outdoors. Things don't go all that well, with the tent turning out to be full of holes, and being startled by a wandering cow, and the family realizes they may just need a break from their vacation!

My kindergartner is reading independently, and though I've already started her on chapter books, she still loves books which contain lots of illustrations. The Mr. Bear series of books fit the bill perfectly as they have a fair balance of text and pictures. Many of the titles may be out of print but I believe they are still in circulation in the local libraries or through third-party vendors here.
