Decent flavor profile, but add "fermentables" to the mix,

I made a batch of the red ale recently and it was pretty good. I've seen some people complain about the flavor (or lack thereof) of Mr Beer mixes. If you just prepare the mix according to the recipe, it will only have 3-4% alcohol. However, you can add anything with some kind of sugar in it (honey, brown sugar, syrups, fruit, etc) to boost the alcohol content and change the flavor profile. I generally add some honey or brown sugar to the recipe and I am pleased with the results. This mix is not going to make a really dark, stout beer like Guinness or even a Sam Adams, but it makes a decent, medium bodied red ale. Very drinkable.

I have been brewing for about 25 years.Recently I received a Mr Beer kit as a gift. So far I have made 3 batches using the standard refill kits. They are the ones that contain a small can of hopped malt and a bag of "booster", the booster is mainly sugar. I am very disappointed with the standard refills. You end up with a watery, low alcohol, flavorless brew. You may as well go to the local supermarket and get the cheapest stuff on the shelf, it's a lot less trouble and better (not good) tasting. I would not recommend the "Standard Refill Kit". I plan to try one of their all malt kits next. That should be a big improvement. I will continue to make the good stuff the old fashioned way. Boiling for an hour and adding the hops in stages. It's a lot more work but you get a superior brew. The only advantage of the Mr Beer kit is that it's very easy and quick. Will write a review of the all malt kit when it's ready.
