First off, it was missing a rubber washer for the valve. Otherwise though, the cider 'wort' preparation was straightforward and the process from beginning to end went without a hitch. Two weeks later, I bottled the brew. Two weeks after that, I tried my first sample.
Plus side: It was nicely fizzy and had some bite. Downside? It was wan and lacking in flavor or character. It tasted almost watered down.
In the meantime, some web searching revealed there are lots of other ways to do simple home brewing -- including just getting some lager yeast, inexpensive 'air-locks' and rubber stoppers from a local brew shop, and adding some sugar (optional) to two $8 gallon jugs of organic unfiltered apple juice from the local Whole Foods. A few weeks later, I used the recycled Mr. Beer empties to bottle the new stuff -- and it was way, way better.
In short, my assessment is the Mr. Beer kit isn't a bad way to get started, and definitely a decent holiday or birthday gift... but there are better ways to go if you want good tasting hard apple cider.
Any budding brewmeister would be well-served to start with this kit.
The kit comes up with a 2-gallon "keg," bottles, brewing supplies, and some cool Mr Beer pint glasses. You will want to buy a funnel for filling. Also make sure you have a dry, temperate place to keep the product as it ferments. We keep ours in the basement while we wait.
The final product is good but not great. It makes 8 16-oz bottles of cider. It's got a tangy cider flavor, but it's no WoodChuck. I would say this kit is a fun afternoon project, but certainly hasn't replaced our trips to the corner store. My friends who are home brew enthusiasts kind of laughed me off when I said I was trying Mr. Beer. From what I understand, some brewers use the MR Beer keg for small and sample batches.
This product does a good job of teaching the fundamentals of brewing practice. This may be a great introduction for folks who are interested in beginning home brewing.
This seemed to be either very old product or not stored correctly. After adding the yeast it started fermenting and then stopped after a couple of hours. I stirred to try and get going again all to no avail. I let it sit for 24 hours and then added a new packet of yeast that I had (make lots of wine). Fermentation started immediately and has now reached .990 specific gravity.
So it was either bad yeast (unlikely), or an old kit (probably as it had an offer that expired 3 or 4 months ago).
**UPDATE- contacted amazon with my issue, and they sent out a replacement which will be here in 2 days!!! Now that's customer service!
