5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. De, January 17, 2007
This review is from: Mr. De: A Biography of Everette Lee DeGolyer (Hardcover)
Everette Lee DeGolyer: a legend not only in the social history of the Southwest and the petroleum industry, but in all of American Big Business. He was, and in memory remains, the world's greatest petroleum geologist, the primary and essential pioneer in revolutionizing the oil industry - which in turn revolutionized the entire world.

At twenty-four he had already struck the richest oil well ever discovered - and from then on his twin talents as scientist and businessman not only contributed immeasurably to the worlds store of geophysical knowledge but led to the formation of three great corporatons in the American economy - Amerada, Texas Instruments, and Texas Eastern Transmision - not to mention the partnership of DeGolyer and MacNaughton, called "the most renowned petroleum consultation service in the world."

A man of thought and culture as well as a man of action, DeGolyer also put together three of the most notable collections of books in the country - and made them available to the public. His financial support rescued the Saturday Review when it was battling for survival, and his constant encouragement eventually resulted in its circulaton multiplying twenty times over. His continual desire to spread knowledge led him to dozens of lectureships and showered him with academic honors, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

His fiercely independent, outspoken service as Deputy Petroleum Administrator during World War II and as advisor to the Atomic Energy Commission made him one of the most respected authorities on natural resources in the govenments of three Presidents. And yet these are but a few of the distinctions DeGolyer earned during his lifetime.

Everette Lee DeGolyer: in its obituary notice, Time magazine observed that there are three kinds of millionaires: the "silver spoon" variety, the "rabbit's foot" variety, and "Mr.De" - in a class by himself. This is his story: Mr. De.
