More About the Author

Jim Meehan, author of the The PDT Cocktail Book, entered the hospitality business in 1995 while studying at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He worked his way through school as a bartender, then moved to New York City in 2002 to hone his palate and develop his craft in venues such as Five Points, Pace, Gramercy Tavern and the Pegu Club.

In 2007 Meehan opened PDT, a hidden cocktail lounge attached to a legendary hot dog stand in the East Village. In 2009, he and the bar were recognized with Spirited Awards for American Bartender of the Year and World's Best Cocktail Bar at Tales of the Cocktail. The bar has received the first ever Outstanding Bar Program Award from the James Beard Foundation in 2012. Jim's cocktails are served at American Express Centurion airport lounges at LaGuardia in New York City, DFW in Dallas, San Francisco International, and McCarran in Las Vegas.

In addition to his work behind bars, Meehan edited eight editions of Food & Wine Magazine's annual cocktail book and currently serves as Drinks Editor for TastingTable.com. His work's been featured in magazines, newspapers, books, aps, television, the radio, and a feature length movie. He and his family reside in Portland, Oregon, where he operates his consulting firm Mixography Inc.

Or just a casual read, there's lots of interesting booze history inside.

Definitely a step up from the type of kitschy cocktail books they put on display in Books-a-Million/Barnes&Noble/etc.

The new updated version now shows the full influence of the resurgence of the great American cocktail. The author hits all the right marks in how to prepare a cocktail properly, such as insisting one only use fresh-squeezed lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit juices.
There are a few peculiarities that are shocking - the author states Old Tom gin is no longer available, which is just bizarre; it is available all over the country and is indeed still produced. Hayman's Old Tom Gin is one. There is also a Manhatta recipe that appears to be a mis-print. Surely the author doesn't intend for a Manhattan of 1 1/2 oz whiskey, 1/2 vermouth, and agostura bitters. It most likely is meant to read 2 1/2oz rye or bourbon, 1oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters... Unless he just likes a 2 oz manhattan.
The organization by alcohol is a little strange too. Where does one put a drink that contains equal parts gin, vermouth and campari? Organization alphabetically or by drink classification would work better.
The recipes are good & one can use them knowing he or she will enjoy the outcome.
It may not be the standard it was in the heyday of the cocktail, but it's making it's way back. I look forward to better organized, more accurate versions in the future! Better proofreading & more attention to detail will make it the standard it used to be.

Here's the standard, the only bartending/cocktail recipe book that you'll ever need. Sure, there are others out there with snazzy illustrations and photos of cocktails that you'll never make but what you have here is the standard, the classic. In here is all the information and recipes to make timelss cocktails. These really are great. When I bartended this was the go-to guide for cocktails, now years later I'm glad to have this in my kitchen for those times when someone may want something just a little different. So yes, go ahead and buy the glitzy cocktail book, but you really ought to have this one too, you'll use it much more and find it indeed more helpful.

As a young adult I went into my first bar and in order to be "cool" I ordered a bottle of Schlitz Beer. The Bartender (I think she was new) asked the older Bartender a question. The older man pulled out a Mr. Bostons' Manual and the two of them proceeded to mix a drink that the set in front of ...... Me? I was hooked on Mr. Bostons Manual and the drink was good also "Between The Sheets"

If you are going to own one book on mixing drinks, this is probably it. Definitely a step up from the type of kitschy cocktail books they put on display in Books-a-Million/Barnes&Noble/etc.
