Amazon.com Review

Anyone who's ever fumbled and stumbled while everyone else is gracefully gliding knows exactly how Mr. Bumble feels. This poor bumblebee can't land on a flower without tumbling head over wings. All the other bees busily gather buckets of pollen for the Queen Bee, but Mr. Bumble comes back empty-handed every time. Fed up, the Queen fusses at him: "Dents are all you seem to gather!" One day, the Queen announces the discovery of a brand-new clover patch, dripping with golden pollen dust. She sends her minions on their way, but Mr. Bumble, as usual, lags behind. What if someone mean lives there, he wonders nervously. And someone does live in the new clover patch, but not anyone Mr. Bumble could have imagined. Charming Mr. Bumble, though different from his peers, shows that even those who have a little more difficulty in life can overcome obstacles (especially if there's a fairy or two on hand) and "learn to fly." The Kennedy siblings, unlike their winged creation, never bumble. Doug Kennedy's pictures of Her Majesty's hive and lush flower-jungles glow with a golden light. The duo's lesson is clear: work hard and be patient; victory will be sweet as honey. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly

"A Victorian sensibility lends an air of enchantment to this story of a fumbling bumblebee," said PW. Ages 4-8.

Anyone who has ever bumbled in life will love this book! A perfect marriage between text and illustration, MR. BUMBLE teaches us all about overcoming life's obstacles and the unexpected friends we meet along the way. My six year old absolutely loves this book!

If you go back in time to 1997 (when Kim and Doug Kennedy developed this book), you can find Mr. Bumble, an awkward bee with a dented pail, was not so much an original but a reflection of the time. Mr. Bumble's insecurity and neurosis brings to mind two TV characters of that era, Paul Buchman from Mad About You and George Costanza from Seinfeld.

For my sons, ages 6 and 4, the similarities between Mr. Bumble and George Costanza were lost on them. However, they did enjoy rereading the bedtime story, which roughly follows the Ugly Duckling fable. Unable to gather pollen with the speed and efficiency of other bees, Mr. Bumble is taken under the wings of fairies (literally and figuratively).

The only complaint is that the illustrations are rather unremarkable, especially compared with recent bedtime books we've read such as How the Fisherman Tricked the Genie and Tadpole Rex. The acrylic illustrations look much older than what I'd expect to find in a book of this age and the effect mutes rather than enhances the story.

In summary, this book will appeal most to children who like bees and fairies, the characters appearing within. Even though the queen bee sums up Mr. Bumble's transformation, "What a fine bee you turned out to be!" on the next-to-last page, the story's moral is left a little vague. Parents can address the lesson of humble beginnings and hard work with their children with a quick Q&A at the end of the book. Our rating: 3 stars.

Mr. Bumble, the endearing character in this beautifully told story, tickles my young readers. With its classic charm and beautiful illustrations, it has become the most requested book in my house for story-telling!
