Editorial Reviews

You're not going to need to know a lot about punk rock to love Mr. Chi Pig and his debut self-titled biographical documentary. You won't even need to like punk rock to like him and his documentary. A survivor against odds, his story outlives madness itself. Born in Edmonton as Kendall Chinn (aka Kenny), Mr. Chi Pig was the front man for one of the biggest names in the first wave of Canadian punk rock: SNFU. Like a lot of those original bands, they never found fame themselves but they influenced an entire generation of musicians from Jello Biafra and Moe Berg to Corb Lund, Matthew Good and Hot Hot Heat. The band's visibility faded even if their influence didn't, Kenny's world filled with more drugs and alcohol, and he moved closer and closer to living on the street and suicide. What surprised everyone, including Mr. Chi Pig himself, was what that drug addiction masked, an even greater threat to his whole well being: schizophrenia. Reluctant to take drugs to treat it at first, he quickly realized that he was already heavily self-medicating just to deal with the day-to-day and slowly, his life began to turn around. Both a comfortable armchair journey through the under-belly of Canadian music and a comeback-kid tale, Open Your Mouth And Say... Mr. Chi Pig is surprisingly accessible for what might've been a niche-music documentary. The film has the feel of sitting and having a beer with some of the biggest names in the music industry as they recount tales of Mr. Chi Pig and his story so far. After more than 30 years of mental illness, drug addiction and punk rock Chi is back to take one last crack at success. So come for the tunes or the drama, you're going to love it either way. The film includes live footage spanning decades and appearances from: MR. CHI PIG, CHUCK DUKOWSKI, JELLO BIAFRA, JOHN KASTNER, EVAN "TADPOLE" JONES, CORB LUND, SHAWN STERN, MATTHEW GOOD TOM HOLLISTON, MOE BERG, CHAD MAREELS, MATT FOX, KEN GOONIE FLEMING, JON CARD, FORD PIER, ROB JOHNSON, JOE 'SHITHEAD' KEITHLEY, LUKE PABICH, STEVE BAYS, BRENDAN CANNING, STUART ROSS, MATT WARHURST, SHANE SMITH, DEREK ADAM, DEVON RB CLIFFORD, DENIS NOAHBODY, MR. PLOW CHRIS WALTER, and many more!

Mr. Chi Pig is arguably one of the most original voices in Punk, as well as being one of the most charismatic singers to ever grace a stage. OUASMCP is a great doc, that focuses on all aspects of Chi's career with SNFU and out, with acts such as The Wongs and Slave Co. Former and current band members are interviewed, as well as friends and other associates tell there storys about Chi. I would liked to have seen Brent and Marc belke comment, however I understand why they might have choose not to be included in this doc. Highly recommended to all fans of SNFU, Punk, or just touching storys abour survival and determination.

As others have mentioned this is not a documentary about the band SNFU, it's a look at the life of Ken Chinn, the singer. It goes into the circumstances that have influenced his lyric writing and choice of subject matter for SNFU songs. Watching this documentary made me go back and listen to the SNFU catalogue and discover some of the deeper meaning of the songs. It's both sad and exciting at the same time and definitely worth watching if you're a fan of SNFU.

IMPORTANT!!! - I was happy to discover that you can BUY the digital download of this documentary for only $5 on vimeo.com.

First off, this is a must see for any true punk fan. That being said, it is a incomplete piece of work. The absence of Belke is obviously apparent and makes a big difference. As for Mr. Chi Pig, he is a fascinating human with a lot of problems and I couldn't get enough of him. His story is a story of a true punk legend (albeit not very glamorous....at all) and I think this DVD captures that aspect of Mr. Chi Pig very well. There's not a lot of live footage, but the interviews are what make this DVD.
