Great features but the plastic smell ruins it,
This review is from: Mr. Coffee JWX3 5-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
The features on this coffee maker are wonderful for the price. I love the fact that you can sneak a cup of coffe mid brew without it dripping all over the hot plate (and it really worked!). They did so many things right like a safety on the delay brew feature that allows you to set up your coffee beforehand, but must be programmed each time in case you forget to set up your coffee for the next brew. It even shuts the coffee maker off after one hour so you don't burn or crack the pot if you forget. I really wanted this coffee maker to be my long term brew companion, BUT I soon became disillusioned when I noticed a burnt chemical smell with each pot of coffee made. Upon opening the top to throw away the used coffee filter, I was almost overwhelmed by the smell which not only affected the taste of the coffee, but permeated the air throughout the house. It smells like burnt electrical wiring and is very strong. I hate to think what chemicals from the plastic leached into the coffee from the brewing. Needless to say, I'm ending my relationship with this Mr. Coffee.

Great little pot but if you're looking for a replacement carafe.........,

I've had this pot for six weeks. Have had no problem with it. It keeps time well and I don't get a funny plastic taste at all. Unfortunately I broke the carafe and could not find a replacement. I combed the Internet and finally contacted Mr. Coffee with my problem. They responded with a number which in turn referred me to another number. That number is: 1-800-672-6333. It's automated but if you're looking for replacement parts, they will ask you to punch in your ZIP code and they will give you the name of a dealer near you from which you can purchase parts. This will save you an hour or so of trying to run this down. My husband picked up the new carafe for me this afternoon. I'm a happy camper again.

Burning smell caused return,

I, too, experienced the burning plastic smell, and so the unit will be returned. It's surprising that a flaw this noticeable makes it past the manufacturer's quality control.

This coffee maker is: Extremely easy to set and/or cancel the delayed start feature. Attractive Makes good coffee Affordable Fun to use My only complaint is that I can't find a carafe replacement. I'm bound to drop the thing!

Good, for the price,

I have used my new coffee maker for 2 weeks now and I really like it. It's easily programmable, makes hot, good-tasting coffee, and I can get 2 pretty full oversize mugs out of one full pot. If there is a downside, it's that the unit still smells a little like burning plastic. I've read other reviews and blogs on the internet and some who claim to know about things like this, say the smell is coming from the plastic "gassing out" as new plastic will do. Sounds reasonable, and I will give it more time. It does seem to help if I keep the lid open when not in use. I also washed the filter basket with baking soda which seemed to help a lot. It certainly doesn't smell nearly as bad as it did when I first used it, so maybe in time the smell will go away. It doesn't seem to make a difference in the taste of the coffee. For the price, it's a real good deal and I am pleased.

Run away!,

I should have listened to others & bought another brand. I can't leave the coffee pot on the hotplate because it scorches it, and the "pause & brew" feature is a joke - ALWAYS dumps coffee onto the hotplate. I've had better luck with a sieve and tea kettle. Had a $10 off brand maker that worked better than this, but the carafe broke and couldn't find another to fit.

Perfectly adequate coffee maker,
This review is from: Mr. Coffee JWX3 5-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
I am going to assume most folks who had trouble with this coffee pot (doesn't make coffee strong enough, water run off, metal carafe not warm when removed from base, etc) have simply never owned a coffee maker before. Those are user errors rather than errors of the coffee pot. It works well for its job--making a few cups of coffee every morning. I cleaned it through and it did not have any plastic smell after. I greatly enjoy being the brew pause feature so I can be impatient with my coffee. Have not had trouble with water run off. If you desire a coffee maker that has an insulated carafe and does a bunch of fancy things you ought to buy one that costs more than $25. But for a $25 coffee maker, it does exactly what it's supposed to. Make a good, reliable, cup of coffee, quickly, with little to no mess.

Don't waste your money,

Don't waste your money on this coffee maker. We received this as a gift and thought we'd give it a try as an alternative to our Krups coffee maker (that we've been using for years). Well it started out well, but we soon started noticing a burning smell coming from the coffee maker every time we use it (smells like electrical burning). This is a bit concerning to us. Beyond this, the cover of the coffee maker covers both the filter and the water reservoir, so the cover opens WAY TOO HIGH, meaning we have to slide this machine out from under the cabinet every time we want to use it, to prevent it from jamming into the bottom of the cabinets. Next, it is nearly impossible to pour water into the reservoir without it spilling all over the place, and even when you do make it in, the water starts leaking out through the pump system and onto the burner, meaning you get a nice "sizzling" sensation when you finally start your cup of coffee. Oh and don't even get me started on the carafe...absolutely impossible to pour any liquid out of it without getting it all over the counter top. Our simple every day task of making coffee just seems to never work right any more...it really shouldn't be this much of a hassle. I don't know what happened....Mr. Coffee used to be a good brand but apparently they are cheapening their products now. STAY AWAY!!

I read a lot of bad reviews regarding this product but went against all of them and bought the coffeemaker anyways. I am so happy I did. It works great. Coffee is so much better and extra hot compared to the GE coffeemaker we had before. I love how it has a delay brew, works great and it's great to be able to delay and pour yourself a coffee while you wait for the rest.
I would highly recommend it, if you're looking for a small great coffeemaker. Use less space and goes well with our stainless steel appliances.

I wanted a 4 or 5 cup programmable coffee maker with auto shut-off. I decided on this one because of the 5 cups. It works, but it brews a little hot, which burns the coffee. It HAS gotten better the more I use it, however. Also, you have to lift the cover on the carafe in order to pour at a decent rate without dribbling everywhere, which is easy to get over. Overall, once it breaks in, it's not too bad.
