Having purchased a Mr. Coffee 4-cup coffeemaker, I wasn't looking forward to buying packs of disposable filters. (My local grocery store doesn't even carry that small size!) I also don't like the waste of single-use filters. So, I was pleased to find this permanent filter. I've been using it for several months now, and my coffee always comes out just fine. The filter is easy to clean and, other than washing it after each use, there is no maintenance involved. Using this filter over time, you'll make up the cost of buying disposable ones, and you'll have that much less to toss in the garbage each time you brew a cuppa joe.

I found that the paper filters left an aftertaste, and are difficult to find. So in the interest of saving the environment just a little bit and having better tasting coffee, I purchased this filter. Granted, with shipping it was almost as much as the coffeemaker, but has been worth it. Much better tasting coffee, very easy to clean. I only wish it had little handles to lift it out of the coffeemaker, as it does fit snugly inside the filter basket.

This $2.49 filter has a $5 shipping charge and you can't get out from under that. So, just accept that and order it anyway.

The paper filters for this coffeemaker are not available in any grocery stores in my area, and they are expensive on Amazon. So, I ordered the permanent filter when I ordered the coffeemaker. Despite a much later delivery date assigned to the filter, they arrived on the same day.

A handle would be superfluous - - even my 63-year-old fingers can easily get the filter out of the basket without any problems.

I haven't noticed any grounds escaping the filter, personally. It seems to work quite nicely. It is a little more fragile than I expected so in a year or two I will probably need to order another.

Edited on 9/4/2014 to add: I was wrong! The filter lasted longer than the coffee pot (almost three years of constant daily use). This is a terrific filter.

Just fine. I've used both paper and permanent filters. Can't distinguish a taste difference.

The few complaints about not making coffee as strong as the mesh bottom type are fantasies. The solid bottom slows the drip time through grinds allowing the coffee to brew longer in the basket thus making for STRONGER coffee. This is not rocket science.

I've been using this filter for almost 2 weeks now and love it! Brewed coffee tastes the same as when I was using paper filters, if not better. As some reviewers have mentioned, it's not a tight fit. However, I've had no issues with weaker coffee or water brewing straight through. Wait for the coffee grinds to dry out a little before disposing - comes right out of the filter with a few good shakes.

I was excited to try a permanent filter in my coffee maker, but found that a permanent filter is too good to be true. The last cup of coffee will have a "sludge" of fine ground coffee that gets through the permanent filter. I have tried using both coffee that I have ground and coffee that is already ground. To get rid of the issue to have to use a paper filter with the permanent filter.

After buying the Mr. Coffee JWX9 5-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Black with Stainless Steel Carafe the only thing missing to make that coffee maker perfect was a permanent filter. I made a guess that the 4 cup permanent filter would fit... and it does!

I use regular old Folgers Colombian coffee in the filter, not the finest ground coffee but I don't see any of it escaping. Unlike a Black and Decker that I owned, this filter has plastic on the bottom, forcing the coffee out the sides of the filter when being made (something I'm told is important to a good permanent filter).

Cleanup is not annoying for me since I have a garbage disposal that I rinse it out into, but I imagine it could be a pain without one.

All and all, happy not to have to buy and waste paper filters.

I ordered the permanent filter because the 4 cup unbleached paper filters are so hard to find. I really didn't expect it to be as good as the paper, but I must say that I've been really pleased. The only small disadvantage is that paper filters are easy to dispose of, where this has to be rinsed off everytime and with our trying to conserve water, I wonder if I'm really "going green" using it.

It's a coffee filter, it's metal, and it filters coffee and the taste is slightly superior to paper filter taste. It is reusable. It is an average coffee filter. the end.

Wow, I love it! I've been using it for three days. It fits easily into the container in my 4-cup Mr. Coffee coffee maker with extra room even. It does produce a small amount of "sludge" but it's entirely acceptable. I need to purchase another one for travel as we always carry a small 4-cup coffee maker when I travel with my husband. Hotels only have single-cup coffee makers these days. It was perfectly packed in a small but thick box that fit easily into my mailbox. I too dump the coffee grounds down the garbage disposal with no problems. I used to dump them in flowers on the deck but I got tired of separating the coffee grounds from the paper filter, a mess. I may return to that. We use a 10-cup coffee maker in the mornings on the weekends, but I use the 4-cup coffee two or three times a day. I like FRESH Columbian Coffee. I love having this little permanent filter with the solid plastic bottom. It cleans up easily and works perfectly for me.

1-12-12: I went back and bought three more of these filters and put them on two other 4-cup coffee makers as we use one for travel. I also, dug out the bigger one (with a handle that I don't use) for our 10-cup Kitchen Aid Coffee Maker. How wonderful! I have been going years without using this simple kitchen helper. No more paper filters for me! I also found a cone shaped one from a coffee maker gone by. Oh well, I have it on hand if and when I get a new coffee maker requiring a cone filter.
