In the half-century since he began his reign as King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale has remained one of rock's most innovative and influential axemen. A bold pioneer in the use of speed, volume and sonic texture, the charismatic Dale invented surf music, and in the process permanently altered the role of the electric guitar in rock 'n' roll. Of all the surf guitarists who would follow in Dale's wake, none could match his prodigious technique, his fierce showmanship or his restless inventiveness.

At the dawn of the 1960s, Dale's passion for the sport of surfing inspired him to create music that replicated the physical sensations of the surfing experience.

Although he began releasing singles on his own Deltone label in the late '50s, Dale made much of his most enduring music during his '60s stint with Capitol Records. In addition to carving out the surf sound on the landmark albums Surfers' Choice, King of the Surf Guitar and Summer Surf, Dale turned for inspiration to another all-American pursuit--drag racing--to create the hot-rod music genre on the LPs Checkered Flag and Mr. Eliminator.

Now, Sundazed is making Dick Dale's reverb-soaked, genius LPs available once again, the way they were meant to be heard: on vinyl. Our vinyl restoration of the vintage Dale catalog features his take-no-prisoners 1964 album, Mr. Eliminator. A great album by an incredible artist, reuined by some of the most muffled and all-around miserable mastering I've ever heard.

Dick Dale's rawest, wildest sides were those he cut for Del-Tone between 1959 and 1963, though he can still cut up a storm. Between 1963 and 1964 he made five albums for Capitol, and it is from these that this budget CD has been compiled. With the help of Hollywood's best session musicians it can't have taken too long to knock out these tracks, but if the results can be a bit formulaic they are nonetheless rousing and stormy. There are tracks from Surfer's Choice, King Of The Surf Guitar, Checkered Flag, Mr Eliminator and Summer Surf, but none of those chosen were also on singles apart from the title track. All are in stereo.

I really like both the vocals and instros on this remastered Dick Dale classic. The nice wide stereo CD would get 5-stars from me BUT there is an issue with the mastering on track #6. At 1 minute 20 seconds, the percusion channel (right channel on my stereo) gets a welcome rush of high end frequencies (cymbals in particular). Where were they before 1 minute 20 seconds? Other than that, the rest of the CD is wonderful in terms of sound quality (as well as performance).
