Ups and downs,
By Rachelle L (Redmond, Wash.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
As an Excel trainer for the past fifteen years, I've seen what does and doesn't work in presenting information to users. There are many good ideas in this book, and deserve being written about. But while some of them are presented well, others sometimes miss the mark. The ones that work give some very helpful information that could be used on the road to mastering Excel. They involve tips that are sure to boost the user's efficiency. But the ones that don't work sometimes portray a solution that is not necessarily the most effective in each case. In those cases, I felt that there were alternatives that would involve fewer steps, fewer keystrokes, or perhaps fewer lines of VBA code. Hopefully those who buy the book will be able to tell the difference between them.

Mr Excel on Excel Exceeds My Wildest Expectations!!!,
By kat chamberlin (Lincolnshire, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
This is the most unbelievable software book I've ever read! I started highlighting helpful ideas, but almost immediately gave up that effort because I'd have to highlight every line! No matter what your level of Excel expertise, this book will boggle your mind. I have a library full of Excel books, but NEVER have I seen even a fraction of these tips and tricks. How Bill and Joseph discovered these shortcuts, I'll never know. But thank goodness they had the foresight and generosity to share them with the rest of us!!! This is a MUST READ BOOK.

Great book if you can decipher the explanations,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
I agree with the other reviewers who have said this book is poorly written. However, I have learned a lot of extremely useful tips. Copying you page setup settings to other sheets is one of my favorites. I also like the fact that this book contains no filler; it's jam-packed with smart tips on using Excel.I would say that if you are already a pretty advanced Excel user, it's not too difficult to decipher the many poorly written explanations. If I were rating the book on its writing quality alone, I'd give it two or three stars. As for usefulness to an already advanced or intermediate user, I give it five. Just be prepared to struggle at times understanding what the authors are saying. I hope they put more care into writing their subsequent books.

Much too over-priced,
By Warren Trump (TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
Having spent time as head of a software publishing firm, I feel I have a solid grasp on good presentation and fair pricing. There is simply not enough quality substance with this book to justify the hefty price tag. The authors would have done better to take less material and present it more clearly.

Excellent reference book.,
By Mark O'Brien (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
Although many other authors and publishers claim that there isn't another Excel book like their's, in this case it is true. The book reads the way a true Help manual should, quick and to the point. There are so many tips and tricks listed in this book that every chapter can teach even the oldest of dogs new tricks. There is a nice blend of tips that speed up spreadsheet navigation, auditing and use with easy to follow examples that introduce some of the most useful features of Excel. If you have ever cringed whilst watched people using Excel inefficiently, just wait until you've mastered some of the techniques explained in this book. The book has examples using VBA but the intent of the book is not to teach VBA extensively. In keeping with the theme of the book, most of the VBA examples that are included are useful and can be directly imported into you workbooks without modification. i.e. useful real-world examples. "Mr. Excel on Excel" is purely and simply a very well-written reference manual for those of us that need the answers quickly.

Too scattered, too [costly]!,
By Cellsman (Boston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
This book jumps around a little too much to follow it easily. I may have found a good tip here and there, but I would expect many more with such a hefty price tag!

Better reference guide than tutorial,
By
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
This book, errors and all, can be used very effectively as a reference guide and for problem solving on occasion. As a tutorial this book suffers from poor organization and scenario development. The overall impression is that you are never quite sure of what you are doing - or why - until you have finished.
Look at this book for tips and tricks - learn Excel somewhere else.

This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
The authoer seemed to have written the book baed on what he knows, but not based on the user-friendly level. I found this book very hard to follow and there is a lot of example I was trying to follow, I just couldn't find the options on my computer.

Full Of Errors!,
By FairCritic (Chandler, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
This books, albeit in the beginning was straightforward, gets loaded with errors when you begin to learn combo boxes in Ch. 23. The exercises from the website and the directions from the chapter do not match up and it gets difficult to decipher when developing validation lists and reports. NEEDS SERIOUS REWORK AND ALONG WITH A FRICKEN REFUND!!

Sloppy Examples and editing - Book is waste of time,
By "zdryan" (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Excel ON EXCEL: Excel 97, 2000, 2002 (Paperback)
Of all the Excel books I consult, the most dismal in quality, accuracy, and clarity, is, without competition, Mr Excel. Time and time again I find myself frustrated with unclear, hard-to-follow text and samples due to mistakes, typos, or just plain sloppiness--on page after page. Anybody with the author's level of education and training should be ashamed to take credit for such a schlocky production and our money should be refunded at double the rate we paid for it. I am a professional analyst consultant and the Mr Excel book is a waste of my time and money.
