I bought my first house, and knew nothing--and got this as a housewarming gift from my brother. It is a really terrific book! I found it easy and fun to read (which is something I could not say about the other home improvement books I have), and yet there is a huge amount of information crammed into it. It's got clever illustrations in it, which I've found really useful. I have to have a lot of renovations done and am working with contractors more than I ever imagined. This book has made it possible to talk to them without sounding like a numbskull. After reading this book I know I am saving a lot of money, and I've got a good feeling that I am spending my money on the right things that will improve the value of my house in the long run. Even if you think you know something about houses, GET THIS BOOK!!!

I recently purchased a home and wasn't sure where to begin if something went wrong. This book does a great job of explaining the inner-workings of a home and demistifies how it works. I can now tackle any task around the house thanks to Lou.

He does a great job of explaining in simple terms how each facet of a home works. A must read for any homeowner.

He is also a great guy. I've had the opportunity to talk to Lou via email about some problems I was having with my house. He was extremely gracious and intelligent in his response. You won't be dissapointed if you buy this book.

I have a new friend in the home building and renovating business. Having this book is like having a relative that can answer all of the questions I have about repairing and renovating my home. The information is solid and easy to understand, and it will help me to make the right decisions when it comes to spending money on my home.

I was told that this book would help me understand my home. In fact it did that and help me save [$$$] on a basement water problem I was having. The contractors were telling me all sorts of things I did not understand. Lou's book breaks it all down and helped me make an informed decision and now my basement is dry. I am telling all my friends who have a home to get this book. Thanks, Lou

This book gives a great overview of how your house works. It's geared towards first time homeowners and I think it does a pretty good job explaining the various systems in a typical house -- how they work and what can go wrong with them.

I think a problem with the book is that it tries to keep every chapter to about 20 pages. I don't know why this is. As a result, some subjects that are more complicated could use more detail, and some just seem to drag on a little longer than I would've liked.

The chapters near the end are also less defined and appear to be just a bunch of thoughts thrown together.

But all-in-all, it's a great book to learn about your new house. The text is easy to read with some humour and good annecdotes from the author's experience. Great housewarming gift.

Lou takes a confusing subject (the nuts and bolts of your house) and makes it easy to understand and fun.

This book helped me understand how my home worked and now I'll know what to tell my contractors what I want and how much to spend. This book is a money saver.
