Book Description

June 17, 2008
Mr. Fooster seems like your average fellow, albeit one who travels with an old bottle of bubble soap. One Tuesday morning, however, he takes us into a rich and vivid world unlike any we've seen before—a world where questioning your assumptions can set you free. Heading out the door with no particular place to go, Mr. Fooster is led by his boundless curiosity to reflect on questions like why is it you never see baby pigeons, and who figured out how to eat artichokes? Mr. Fooster shows us that pondering the little things in life can be a reward unto itself.

The pairing of Tom Corwin's lyrical prose and Craig Frazier's enchanting illustrations create a world where believing is seeing. MR. FOOSTER TRAVELING ON A WHIM is the perfect gift book for anyone looking to escape the rigid confines of reality. Take a vacation you’ll never forget and explore a realm of wonders and possibilities with Mr. Fooster.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This gentle wisp of a book offers relief from the busy fretfulness of most comics. When Mr. Fooster leaves his home for a walk, he doesn't plan to save the world, just to appreciate its strangeness. Some of the oddities he ponders may seem too familiar to notice, such as the mechanical perfection of mandarin orange segments, but some might upset a person lacking Mr. Fooster's serene outlook. He's not startled, for example, when the soap bubble he's blowing turns into a green DeSoto sedan; he just drives it home and decides to sell it on eBay. Nor is he upset when his feet take root out in the woods so that he grows leaves and becomes indistinguishable from a tree until, several seasons later, a butterfly convinces him that he can think himself free. As the title says, Mr. Fooster likes to wander a lot, whimsically admiring the quirky world waiting for him, and the story invites readers to do the same. Corwin's text is suitably understated, especially in the most potentially thrilling or threatening episodes. Frazier's sepia-hued illustrations nicely complement the unexpectedly substantial message. Though this looks like a children's book, adults capable of childlike wonder will find it quietly delightful. (June)

Review

"Mr. Fooster is one of the more charming perambulators to come around in recent days. I am delighted to walk with him."

–NPR's Kitchen Sisters (Davia Nelson & Nikki Silva)

"In case you had forgotten that the world is shaped as equally by imagination as matter, and that amongst all its travails, it is still a luminous, startling, and lovely place, Mr. Fooster will return the spring to your step and the smile to your face."
–Peter Coyote, author of Sleeping Where I Fall

“Corwin's text is suitably understated, especially in the most potentially thrilling or threatening episodes. Frazier's sepia-hued illustrations nicely complement the unexpectedly substantial message.”

"With Mr. Fooster as my guide, Traveling on a Whim has become my favorite way to holiday. He loosens and lifts our thoughts sky high to recapture a world of possibility."
—Alfre Woodard, Actress

“The drawings are shadowy, handsome. The book has a hypnotic effect, like the children's stories of Margaret Wise Brown.”
—LA Times Book Review

“Corwin's elegantly fashioned prose and Frazier's lightly burnished panels are fond reminders of just how liberating life can be when we unshackle the chains from our creative minds.”
—Contra Costa Times

“...buoyantly inventive and wondrously whimsical. Corwin's elegantly fashioned prose and Frazier's lightly burnished panels are fond reminders of just how liberating life can be when we unshackle the chains from our creative minds.”
—San Jose Mercury News

“If you thought your chapter-book days were behind you, you might have another thing coming……Mr. Fooster makes for good company. He's a regular guy who wanders off on an extra-ordinary journey, and he has got lots of great insights to share along the way...The brown-ink illustrations are the perfect complement to the spare text.
—Fredricksburg Free Lance-Star

“This tasty little novella is a wonderful little read, easily devoured in one sitting, though
it stays with you after you put the book down. MR. FOOSTER is an excellent, almost
musical, piece of art. I highly recommend it.”
—Marc Mason, comicswaitingroom.com

“...a gem of the rarest sort. Mr. Fooster has been gorgeously illustrated by Craig Frazier.
The result is nothing short of enchanting. It's a sweet tale, one that would make a great
gift for just about anyone.”
—Bluestalking.typepad.com

“Like Sendak's wild creatures or the places that Harold's purple crayon takes him, Mr.
Fooster's wanderings began to act as a conduit for my own imagination to walk about...
These illustrations serve as a perfect complement for the scenes being depicted and they
help with the immersive qualities of Corwin's tale. Mr. Fooster: Traveling on a Whim
will make for a wonderful, magical experience that will conjure memories of rainy day
dreams ...a book that I will add to my small canon of works to be re-read periodically...
Most highly recommended.”
— Blog of the Fallen

“...a lovely tale that encourages adults to think outside the box and try to remember the
wonder and imagination that we had as children. The lyric prose is accompanied by Craig Frazier’s lovely sepia toned pen and ink illustrations that enhance the story.”

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely and magical little book, June 19, 2008
By
This review is from: Mr. Fooster Traveling on a Whim (Hardcover)
Mr. Fooster is truly a beautiful book. The simple story follows no rules, taking you on a series of journeys where you never know what's around the next corner. There is nothing predictable about it, each page reveals another little surprise, from a bubble that turns into flying fish to the lead character sprouting roots and becoming a tree. Corwin delivers a message without preaching - it's silly and serious and most importantly, fun to read.

The illustrations are delightful. Craig Frazier is brilliant, his illustrations bring the words and Mr. Fooster's clever world to life with elegance and charm. I'm definitely a fan.

This is a wonderful gift book for adults and kids. I'm stocking up!

I'm not usually attracted to quick-read graphical books of this ilk, but I literally could not put this one down. I didn't want to leave Mr. Fooster's world, because he asked all those questions that I've asked myself in the background of my mind, but were drowned out by that pseudo-busy-ness of my so-called "life." This book holds a truly magical experience that I will recommend and recommend and recommend.
