Editorial Reviews

I really like his approach, his tone and the way he experiments and stretches out, he's not just playing the same old stuff we've all heard way too much of. --Charlie Musselwhite "It's not surprising that Musselwhite holds Primich in such high regard. . . . Neither has been content to stand still; each is continually expanding his music and the perceived limitations of his instrument. "I was never just a blues guy," Gary points out; "it really came do to, I just wanted to work playing the harmonica. I got hold of some records by Jerry Byrd, the steel guitarist, and I thought, I want to be the Jerry Byrd of the harmonica. . . . Then I got into jazz saxophonists like Lester Young and Gene Ammons. . . . I never wanted to be a blues nazi," he shrugs. "I just wanted to be somebody who played music." --Dan Forte, from his liner notes

stop here for heavy harmonica licks in the texas blues style. primich is a fine vocalist who plays harp on every song. he doesn't rely so much on speed, though that's there in fits and starts, as on tone and phrasing. there are harpists who seem faster, but none deeper. he does 90s- style takes on little walter and sonny boy, and sounds like no one else I know. he's fancy or plain as the song dictates, and the songs show a variety surprising on a blues recording.

if the blues can rock, than this disc rocks. a classic harmonica player with a style all his own. the musicians seem to melt together to make one big sound. get this disc, listen to it, and see if you aren't asking yourself two things: 1. why did i wait so long to get this disc? 2. how soon can i get more gary primich?

Music is a tough way to make a living especially if you're playing the blues. Gary Primich played a great harp, and made some great music. This CD is one of his best. It rocks and so did he. It's unfortunate that he never found a bigger audience. Listen and be impressed.

After I listened to Gary do his thing on the harp, I was hooked. Sad to say we will never hear his talent again. This is good stuff people!
