5.0 out of 5 stars Link Wray is a legend for a reason, April 15, 2002
This review is from: Mr. Guitar: Original Swan Recordings (Audio CD)
Link Wray is one of those masters of deception. he makes it look (sound?) sooo easy. he's not playing thousands of notes a second or playing mixolydian runs over 13/8 time signatures while breathing fire.

what he does (did?) is play rock'n'roll guitar better than anyone else ever has. not to take away from chuck berry, but link wray does it ALL with his six strings. he don't need words. he just plugs that axe in and rips.

i swear, it's just freaky how ... and majestic he makes it all sound. the only other musicians i've heard that can make so much of so little are Miles Davis and Chet Baker.

i guess when you really know the right notes to play, you ain't got to play a whole lot of 'em.

every time i hear link, i just wanna run out, cover myself in tattoos, grab some cheap beers and go drag-racing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hep-Cat Hyperbolie, December 29, 2002

Mr. Guitar is probably the best one stop sampling of Wray-- which is something pure and raw! Imagine reading a great pulp novel, (Jim Thompson or David Goodis, James M Cain or Fredric Brown) and at the same time, imagine barralling down the highway after midnibht in a 57 Chevy. It's that kind of beautiful!

I can not believe there are not hundreds of reviews here with people drooling all over themselves. If you are interested in early Rock and Roll and guitar instrumentals, then buy this album. Afterall, Rumble is the only instrumental Rock song to be banned. Too Cool

5.0 out of 5 stars Link Wray: Master of the Power Chord, April 6, 2000
This review is from: Mr. Guitar: Original Swan Recordings (Audio CD)
An original instumental rocker who was way ahead of his time. His music stills holds up well and this is proven by the many movies who use Links music. Anyone who pokes holes in his amp with a pencil to get the proper fuzz feedback in "Jack the Ripper" gets my vote for inovation.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Just Doesn't Get Better Than This, May 10, 2002
This review is from: Mr. Guitar: Original Swan Recordings (Audio CD)
40+ years ago, Link Wray was creating all this inovative guitar stuff. Listen to this CD and then listen to modern guitar work and you will realize that Link did it first (and best). Link Wray and Lonnie Mack are THE two rock guitar pioneers.

5.0 out of 5 stars way ahead of his time, August 18, 2001

you'll listen to this and think of a list of others that influenced link wray. then'll you'll stop and realize the names on the list were actually influenced BY link wray. then factor in that a good number of these were done in the late FIFTIES, and it's even more impressive. among other things, here is a heavy influence on the surf sound (ckeck out LOS STRAITJACJACKETS "ITCHY CHICKEN", homage to wray's "RUN CHICKEN RUN) and one of the first users of the distorted chord. Plus, this contains SIXTY-THREE tracks. well worth it.
