Yes there are warnings, but the fact is that sometimes you forget and push the ignition button before turning the fan on.

The Hero is the right size for the job, and uses less fuel and power than the bigger kerosene heater.

The one I got, came quick. Followed directions and it finally started. The battery does not hold the charge even for a couple days without being plugged in. It only would run 3 hours and not the 8 advertized without being plugged in. Sore thumb every time I start it, and definitely needs to be plugged in for all day heat.
I sent it back after doing a few things tech wanted me to try. There was just too much wrong. They sent a free return label and after I called them with the tracking number, a new one came.
This one works as advertized, holds the charge and starts after 3 or 4 tries, as it is supposed to. In one hour it warms my 500 sq. ft. greenhouse 15*F. It runs about 6 hrs. on a 20 lb. tank. Once charged, it will run on its own battery, or off my solar/battery/350W sine wave inverter. It takes about an hour to charge for an hour of running off its own battery.
I like it now, because it is the only Mr. Heater that does not auto low oxygen shut off. I'm at 8,880'. It is perfect for heating the greenhouse, or a garage, and would help as an emergency house heater, although I do have a larger kerosene heater. The Hero is the right size for the job, and uses less fuel and power than the bigger kerosene heater.
Customer service was very good.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
There's no doubt of the appeal of a heater that doesn't require kerosene or an electric cord. Propane burns far cleaner than kerosene (and is easier to find in urban/suburban settings), and sometimes, it isn't feasible to string an electric cord everywhere.

And so within some limitations, the Mr Heater Hero 35K BTU has a lot of appeal. Its light, attractive, and comes with everything you need to get started except for a 20 pound propane tank (the same kind you use on your gas barbecue grill).

In the box is the heater, an electric cord to recharge the internal battery, a hose and regulator that lets you connect it together.

You charge the battery for a few hours, attach the propane tank, press the on switch, then the ignite switch (and hold it for a few seconds for the flames to catch), and voila, instant heat. Perfect for directing heat towards changing to snow tires on your car, or whatever else you might do where its a bit cold. You probably won't even need the directions, although they've put a set of permanent instructions together and attached them to the handle. Nice touch.

The fan blows air, although not at the rate if you've used a similar sized kerosene "torpedo" type heater. But its so portable that you forgive it for that sin. Besides, at 35K BTU, its probably 1/4 the rating of the typical kerosene heater and much lighter (although you've got to factor in the weight of the propane tank). And there's no odor from operation ,usually the bane of most kerosene heaters.

Through experimentation, I discovered you can plug it in to an outlet for longer operations. And according to the instructions, you'll go through 1.6 pounds of fuel per hour. I didn't burn through a full tank, so I can't verify the rating.

If you're in a hurry and even once forget to start the fan before hitting the igniter, it shoots a flame out the rear and burns out the plastic fan blades. A product cannot be designed to catastrophically fail if the user makes one mistake that is as easy as pressing the wrong button. It needs an electronic (or mechanical) safety to prevent ignition if the fan is not on. Also, it takes several attempts to ignite the gas with the igniter button, sometimes 6 or 7.

Just repeating what others have already said - though this little heater puts out the heat it claims, you have to start it up in a *very* specific way in order to (a) get it to work and (b) get it to work SAFELY. Yes, one must always be careful when using a product like this, but if it's going to spit flames out the back if you forget to turn on the fan before igniting...well, that's a pretty big problem/safety hazard/easy way to burn out your heater.

Now, for such a compact, light heater this thing does pack a surprising punch...and of course it's nice to not have to worry about running a power cord or finding kerosene when propane is much easier to find (at least where we live).

Additionally, if you purchase this product please note that it is meant to be used outside, or in an *open* shed/garage, not in a closed-in area. (I know, that sounds obvious, but better safe than sorry!)

In conclusion...not the safest heater out there, but for the price and the size it's worth the money *if you are careful*.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I was going to use this in my basement in the winter for when the electricity goes off from storms. I figured it would keep the basement warm enough to keep my water pipes from freezing but Mr. Heater emailed me & said not to do that, that this product is for outdoor use only so I gave it to my son to use while camping out as it was only 29 degrees in the evenings this last week when he camped & it worked great for keeping the tent warm. He put it in the flap door & left that door open so it was not too hot on the bedding & items in the tent. Then he used it to keep the area warm around the camp where they sat out during the day. Since it was very windy out it keep the air warm that was blowing towards them as he placed it with the wind behind him. Very easy to use & to connect to the propane tank.
