This review is from: Mr. Jelly Lord (Hardcover)
This is a rare, wonderful book, compiled by Laurie Wright (co-founder of the classic jazz magazine "Storyville") and published in 1980, long before the recent revival of books on Jelly Roll Morton. It remains a gold mine of information. Wright compiled the complete chronology of Morton's recording sessions, and noted which other musicians were there at each; those takes never issued by the record labels are listed alongside those released on 78rpm records and/or reissued on LP. (Of course, the book does not cover CD releases, but these are covered well enough in the widely-available The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings: Ninth Edition.) Additionally - and just as helpfully - included are brief biographical sketches and reproductions of vintage photographs and ads.
The asking price may be steep, but I heartily advise anyone seriously interested in Morton's work to get your hands on a copy while you can: it's almost certain the contents will never be reprinted, but just as unlikely that they'll ever be equalled. |
