5.0 out of 5 stars Great Accent Light
The simulated flickering candle gives just enough light for the walk through our yard without glare or cold color tones often associated with LED. The metal parts are not very heavy guage, but are of sufficient quality for a nice look, and should be more than adaquate for durability-certainly better than some plastic and resins I've seen at home stores in about the same...

2.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Light isn't enough light...
I bought this light becuase I thought the idea of a "candlelight" flickering was an interesting idea. However, there isn't enough light thrown by this product to illuminate a pathway sufficiently in the dark. In addition, one light worked great and the other was not consistent in the amount of light produced. I love solar powered lights however I don't think this was...

This review is from: Mr. Light Copper Plated Stainless Steel Lantern with Shepherd's Hook (Lawn & Patio)
The simulated flickering candle gives just enough light for the walk through our yard without glare or cold color tones often associated with LED. The metal parts are not very heavy guage, but are of sufficient quality for a nice look, and should be more than adaquate for durability-certainly better than some plastic and resins I've seen at home stores in about the same price range. The "glass"-actually acrylic-panals are beveled, adding to the overall impression. Another better-quality feature is the on / off switch, and the rechargable batteries are easy to reach when replacement time comes in 2 or 3 years. My only minor concern is that the end of the hook does not have much of a bend and might not keep the light from sliding off in heavy wind. If necessary, a small crimp or set screw in the hook would probably be sufficient.

First, a little history...

Last Spring I bought a box of 10 sun powered lights. They are also copper plated. I like them. The glass lenses that help protect the white LEDs are faceted, so the light radiates across the ground like a person might draw the rays of a sun. When spaced about 8 feet apart (I'm guessing), they provide enough light that I can find my way. I have 2 problems with these lights: 1) the earwigs love to do whatever they do inside the glass lenses and inside the tubes that stick in the ground (where they get in, I think), 2) it has been a dry 6 months, but the copper plating is already weathering away. They're not getting a patina. It just looks like it was cleaned abrasively with a scouring pad.

Fast forward...

A month ago, I bought 6 of these sun powered lanterns. I really like these. I didn't realize it when I purchased them, but light radiating from these is completely different than the others. The orange(?) LED flickers and lights up a piece of plastic that looks like a candle. As simple electronics go, I'd say it is very realistic. They stand about 3 feet tall on the hook. They do not put out as much light as the others, and they do seem to lose their strength as the battery loses energy. Even with the lost energy, they manage to flicker all summer night and into the morning. Last night they went on sometime between 7 and 8pm, and were still going at 6am this morning.

I have 2 problems with the lanterns as well: 1) the hooks come in 3 pieces, which seem to be made independently of each other. The hook and stake portions look and feel like solid copper, but the piece connecting them looks and feels like copper plated aluminum, and I worry that the 3 portions will weather differently, 2) 1 of the 6 lanterns stopped working; probably the connection to the battery has come loose.

It will be interesting to see which bugs take up residence in these lanterns, and how long the copper plating will last, but I would, and probably will, buy them again.

This light is well constructed. I really like the flickering effect which mimics a real candle. It doesn't provide a lot of light, but is still very appealing from the curb.

it looks pretty, but it simply won't hold a charge, despite getting blasted with sunlight 12-14 hours a day. it's sitting on the sill of our bathroom window (the idea was it'd be a pretty nightlight), but that idea failed.

day one it gave off a weak but pretty glow, day two, nothing. Three months later, and it's just sitting there mocking me!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great accent light for the garden...but short lived, May 16, 2010

This is not for utilitarian purposes. Don't expect a bright light. It is mainly decorative. For that it is quite attractive. Flickers and gives off a soft amber glow.

Update. Four months later. The light has failed. Reason unknown. Have tried replacing batteries but that doesn't seem to be the problem. So one summer was it.

It makes a very nice glow in the rock garden. I will buy a few extra to make a very lovely light among the cactus and succulent.
