Classic Cary Grant,

What can one say? This is classic Cary Grant as his funny, witty, clever, debonair best. He plays a gambler who's putting together a bankroll but has to swap identities with a deceased sea captain to avoid the draft. During his time as "Joe Bascopolous", he lands a nice little scheme in running the gambling concession for the War Relief ball -- an organization headed up by a smart, classy and beautiful woman who - naturally - falls head over heels for Grant. But, is he really in love or is he going to take her money and run? Great movie, great cast, and great story.

A reformed gambler sees the light,
By Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Lucky [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It's hard to believe this one isn't on DVD yet! Cary Grant plays a gambler who convinces a wartime relief organization to run a gambling function for one night to raise money for supplies to send overseas. Only his real motive is to keep all the profits for himself and skip town. But he falls in love with the organization's leader (Lorraine Day) and reforms. There is one horrendous scene in a church where Grant comes to see the light, but otherwise the picture is pretty good. Day is more a looker than an actress, but Grant is good in the lead. It's very well directed, with some interesting use of "silent conversation" behind glass doors that open so we can catch the main points as they're said. There are some surprises, too, at the end, but they seem only tacked on to get the right (Hollywood) ending. But not a bad movie overall. Worth a watch.

Classic Grant, witty and charming,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mr Lucky [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Cary Grant is at his most charming and the use of Australian slang is intriguing. I liked this movie because it is the typical "bad guy" (sort of) meets girl story with charm. The plot keeps you wondering whether the rich girl and the boss gambler will ever get together. With the added double-crossing partner and the soul searching Grants character must do, it is a terrific movie. A real "Briny-Marlin".

How Can a Cary Grant Movie Not Be On DVD?,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Mr Lucky [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Mr. Lucky may not be one of Cary Grant's best movies and his character is not as likeable as characters he has played in other movies but it's still a good movie anyway. A previous reviewer said that Mr. Lucky is very underrated and I have to agree with that statement and I think this movie should be transferred to DVD, I mean how can a Cary Grant movie not be on DVD?

Great DVD!!,
This review is from: Mr. Lucky (DVD)
This is a great DVD with excellent quality. A romantic comedy yes with the wonderful Cary Grant. It does have some twists along the way but happy endings are always appreciated! Highly Recommend. All of the Archive Collection DVDs are available from the Turner website for $17.99. Please support Turner with getting more classic movies onto DVD.

Review for Warner Archive quality not Movie,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mr. Lucky (DVD)
It is a discgrace that Warner would release such a lousy print of such a great movie. The movie is one of Grant's best and deserves 5 stars. But the print from Warner Archives is horrible. I was excited at being able to get some movies that were not on DVD before through warner archives and made the mistake of ordering 4 films. I already had 3 on VHS, but wanted them on DVD.One of those is Mr. Lucky - which, as I've said is one of my favorite Grant films. Unfortunately, the film's picture quality is probably worse then then my VHS tape and is clearly MUCH worse then the print quality you would see when the Turner Classic movie channel plays it on TV from time to time. It is disgraceful not only for Warner to be giving such crappy transfers to great films, but it is equally disgraceful to charge classic movie fans for films that have worse print quality then what the would see on TV when TCM plays the films and even worse then the old VHS tape was!!! I've still got around 200 classic films on VHS and another 500 now on DVD, however I will NOT be purchasing any more Warner Classic films, even though there were around 50 or 60 titles I was interested in picking up - many of which I used to have on VHS and some that weren't available on VHS before. I know a lot of people are just happy to see some of the Warner Archive titles on DVD, but as the paying public, we should not be supporting their hosing us by putting out such crappy quality of some of the best movies made!!

The film that made my wife hate Cary Grant,
By Gandalf T. Grey "the Wizard" (Hernando, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Lucky [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a love story, you must first know that, and it spawned a collection of TV shows, and other concepts that used the "Gambling Boat" location. It's also a film where our Hero does the right thing for the right reasons....and does finally have a really great endingIt's a comedy too, but it hits hard at war time actions of it's main characters, and has a very significant scene when Cary delivers a speech about being looked through like a piece of "dirty glass" Unfortunately it was my wife's first meeting with Cary Grant, (Whom I must say was even more elegant in real life than in the films, as I was to find out one day in Greewich Village as we passed on the street) and she could never get past the fact that he left the woman who loved him to help with the war effort, and she has, to this day, never forgiven him. I relate this to let you know just how good an actor Mr. Grant is.......

A Darker Role for Cary Grant,
By

This review is from: Mr Lucky [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It's hard to find a Cary Grant film that I don't like-he is one of my favorite actors of all time. In a different sort of role, Grant plays a very dark character who is running a gambling outfit on a ship. This film isn't his typical light-hearted, will he get together with the girl story. Grant shows that his acting is more than one dimensional-he can play roles of all types. This isn't one of my favorite Grant films, but I'm glad that I watched it.
