5.0 out of 5 stars Damian Marley's first album and ode to his father.
The title of Mr. Marley is truly the correct one. Many tracks contain the lyrics of Bob Marley, sung by Bob's son and Damian's half-brother Stephen. Damian toasts his way through an array of roots, and sometimes almost hip hop influenced reggae. This was a Marley production, and there's plenty of Marley influence. Some beats come from the days when Damian had seen his...

3.0 out of 5 stars Me Name Jr. Gong...
This album is more for people who want to own everything by Damian Marley than anything else. Get "Welcome to Jamrock" and "Halfway Tree" before you get this album, because those albums show Damian in his true form. This is the beginning of Jr. Gong and isn't quite as polished. The album should really be called "Damian and Stephen Marley - Mr. Marley" because Stephen...

5.0 out of 5 stars Damian Marley's first album and ode to his father., November 3, 2005
This review is from: Mr Marley (Audio CD)
The title of Mr. Marley is truly the correct one. Many tracks contain the lyrics of Bob Marley, sung by Bob's son and Damian's half-brother Stephen. Damian toasts his way through an array of roots, and sometimes almost hip hop influenced reggae. This was a Marley production, and there's plenty of Marley influence. Some beats come from the days when Damian had seen his big brother Ziggy, and his band The Melody Makers (contained Cedella Marley, Bob's daughter), others are complete creations by Stephen "Raggamuffin" Marley, who has produced not only Damian's album, but "Chant Down Babylon", a Bob Marley album containing many of hip hops largest name. The Marley Brothers truly start to develop the type of music you hear later in "Halfway Tree" and "Welcome To Jamrock". It sounds nothing like "Welcome to Jamrock" for the most part, but is essential to understand the path Damian took to get to where he is musically at with his lyrics and stephen's producing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Marley by Damian Marley, September 6, 2002

This CD was bought for me by a dear friend. I should've kissed him for acknowledging how much I adore Jr. Gong. Many good songs are on this CD. He includes one of Bob's songs "One More Cup of Coffee" which captures the rootsie style of his dad. For being an early CD for Damian I thought it was great!! Mr. Marley's a classic! If you love Bob, this is a CD you must get. Damian is my favorite performer of all his children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CD I own, April 14, 2006
This review is from: Mr Marley (Audio CD)
Thank you Bob, as if the legacy of his music was not enough, his greatest legacy is his Children. Zig Zag, Ragamuff, Ju Ju, and Ky-mani, have continued to carry the troch admirably. This CD is an absolute must own, Jr. is fast becoming the best Reggae artist around, and this CD really sticks to his roots while adding some great beats and lyrics, Raga Muff and Jr. are a deadly combo, and they absolutely rock this CD out, Kingston 12, One More Cup of Coffee, Trouble, are Great tribute to their Dad. Makes me want to have children, Bob must be in heaven with a smile ear to ear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marley magic continues with the "youngest veteran" ONE LOVE, March 28, 1999

This review is from: Mr Marley (Audio CD)
This cd is just a continuation of the magic first created by H.I.M. and passed down through the Marley family. If you have never heard any Marley family music, this is a good place to start

I love this CD very much, it speaks to my soul and fill my mind. I have long waited for some one from the Marley family to feed my soul with what Bob use to give and I have fianlly find the one "Damian". Please keep me inform of up coming CD's and performances. I will take this home to my wife and let her feed from it. Peace Man - Jah is for us, who can be against us- He loves us.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Killer Debut!, October 13, 2000

This is a MUST OWN set! Damien rocks, but I will never compare him to Bob, as several reviewers already have. Damien simply represents a different type of music. As a die-hard roots reggae fan, that is what I appreciate most about the album. Although he covers a lot of Wailer music here, his style is revolutionary. The first tune is a great example. He combines strong roots basslines with killer rhythms and rap-like lyrics, creating a new kind of reggae altogether. I usually prefer roots to anything resembling dancehall or rap, but this is a nasty set and a definite exception. I have listened to it hundreds of times, and everyone that's heard it agrees. Most of the tracks are good enough to listen to on repeat, but the album is spoiled by just a few terrible tries. For that reason I give it 4 stars.

he captures his fathers sound and message, only with a modern bass line. It goes off. Good listening, you've got to get this if you are a marley fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only is Jr Gong fine as hell, he's talented. I love him, April 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mr Marley (Audio CD)
I absolutely love Damian Marley. Ever since I saw him on Caribbean Rhythms, I've been a huge fan. His cd MR. MARLEY is my favorite cd, along with MARLEY MAGIC, which features him and his family as a tribute to the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley. His voice as he rapidly delivers his lyrics, is soo sexy. Those Ghetto Youths are just too cute, get the album, it's hype as hell. BIG UP THE GYI ~~> DAVID "ZIGGY"; STEVE "RAGGA"; JULIAN "JUJU"; ROHAN "RUGGU"; DAMIAN "JR GONG" One Love, One Aim, One Destiny. PS ~~~> if you have connections with GYI (ghetto youths international), email me, peace.

3.0 out of 5 stars Me Name Jr. Gong..., August 6, 2007
This review is from: Mr Marley (Audio CD)
This album is more for people who want to own everything by Damian Marley than anything else. Get "Welcome to Jamrock" and "Halfway Tree" before you get this album, because those albums show Damian in his true form. This is the beginning of Jr. Gong and isn't quite as polished. The album should really be called "Damian and Stephen Marley - Mr. Marley" because Stephen makes an appearance on almost all of the songs, and he produces them all. Most of the songs are remakes of Bob Marley classics, with Stephen singing the parts Bob sang and Damian adding his own "toasting" verses on them. "Trouble" = Bob's "So Much Trouble In The World." "10,000 Chariots" = Bob's "Midnight Ravers." "Kingston 12" = Bob's "Trenchtown Rock." "Keep On Grooving" = Bob's "Keep On Moving." "Searching (So Much Bubble)" = Bob's "So Much Trouble In The World" (again). "One More Cup Of Coffee" = Bob's "One Cup Of Coffee" (the best Bob cover on here in my opinion). "Me Name Jr. Gong" has Bob's "Crazy Baldhead" as the background music. So, its mainly a tribute to Bob Marley with newer versions of his songs.

The highlights of this album are "Love and Inity," "One More Cup Of Coffee," "Me Name Jr. Gong," and "Mr. Marley." If you like dancehall/hip-hop or if you've heard all of Bob's songs and want newer versions of them, this cd is for you. If you don't have "Welcome to Jamrock" or "Halfway Tree," get them first. They are both 5 star albums.
