Delving into Haggardian byways,
By Lady Marian "wordreign" (Florence Italy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr. Meeson's Will (Paperback)
As one who grew up on Haggard adventures and possesses almost 40 of his novels, I read this obscure title with amused surprise. Forget your usual expectations. This slim book is almost as unique among Haggard's typical output as his first novel "Dawn," though a far frailer piece of work. Yes, there's a modicum of adventure and a voyage to far-off parts, but "Mr Meeson's Will" is light, humourous, and more than a trifle bizarre, with a faint dash of satire. Also, the protagonist this time around is female--and a gutsy, likeable young lady she is. It's fun to suspend disbelief in the whole enjoyable, unbelievable little story. Haggard fans will be bemused. I'd say, don't skip it; add it confidently to your collection. But if you're approaching Haggard for the first time, this is not the way to get to know him--go for his more famous titles instead. |
