Book Description

October 30, 2007
The year is 1792 — the start of the French Revolutionary Wars, and a shadow hangs over John Thomas Fury on his first voyage as a midshipman aboard the 32-gun frigate Amazon. His fellow sailors already see Fury as a pariah due to the fact that ten years earlier, his father, a brig commander, became mentally unbalanced and violent, and his ship’s crew mutinied and went over to the French. Now, as Amazon heads southwards on her voyage to India, Fury is involved in a dreadful shipboard accident and finds himself working doubly hard to prove that he isn’t cursed like his father.

Redemption arrives when Amazon reaches Bombay, only to discover that ships of the East India Company have disappeared. Somewhere in the Indian Ocean a very aggressive privateer is at work and Amazon is dispatched to find and destroy her. But Amazon finds herself in a fight for her life against a much stronger foe, resulting in many officers’ deaths. Fury, in his first ever combat, finds himself in charge of the gun-deck.

In such crucibles of fire are the officers in His Majesty’s Service forged. Showing exceptional courage and self-possession under fire, Fury forever banishes the shadows of the past and his naval career begins in glory, as he become a leader of men.

G.S. Beard has written his first novel in Mr Midshipman Fury.

This review is from: Mr Midshipman Fury (Paperback)
This ia a tale of daring-do -- in the tradition where sailors and officers don't swear, the officers address the men as "lads", one Englishman is worth (at least) two frenchmen or other foreigners and everyone is brave and competent. Although it starts with a prologue involving rotten officers and a mutiny, the adventures of Mr Fury himself do not reflect a world where only the iron fist of discipline deals may deal with a basically unjust system. Character subtlety is not a priority; adventure is -- and it is very well done. Mr Fury's startling leadership talents in a fight -- not to mention the astonishing number of opponents he runs through -- is told in sraight forward fashion, and at least his exploits have not been cribbed whlesale from the astonishing real-life adventures of Lord Cochrane. This is not O'Brien or Cornwell on warfare in the Napoleonic era. Instead, lads, it is good escape literature. I, for one enjoyed it, and will get the next in the series for times when pure light escape literature is wanted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great debut !, April 10, 2008

This review is from: Mr Midshipman Fury (Paperback)
Mr. Beard's first novel in the Fury series is quite entertaining.

Another great book set in the age of sail with plenty of blood and action, loss and glory.

If you like a fast paced, easy to read book in the fashion of Charles White and Michael Aye, this book is for you.

ALSO RECOMMENDED: Broos Campbell, Frank Eccles, the GREAT C.S. Forester, Alexander Kent and Dudley Pope.

4.0 out of 5 stars In the best tradition, October 17, 2007
This review is from: Mr Midshipman Fury (Paperback)
G.S. Beard completely captures the milieu of Age of Sail warfare in the best of traditions as envisioned by Forester and O'Brian.

A thoroughly entertaining tale of a young gentleman with a past he can't escape. I bought this book in London to read on the plane back to the US and couldn't have been happier.

Congratulations to G.S. Beard on this well crafted book.
