Book Description

October 17, 2006

Ever since Eve asked Adam, "Do I look fat in this fig leaf?" it has been apparent that husbands don't know how to relate to their wives. Men believe they understand women and vice versa, but really men know as much about women as a cocker spaniel knows about assembling a Weber grill.

Welcome to The Mr. & Mrs. Happy Handbook, Steve Doocy's laugh-out-loud perspective on love, marriage, and family. The book can be used for its hilarious husband and wife wisdom or, if things aren't going well, as a projectile to get somebody's attention. This is not an advice book. It is a don't even think of trying this book. The author, his family, and his collection of friends (some very famous in the worlds of entertainment, business, and politics) have already discreetly made almost every conceivable marriage mistake, and it is their hope that this irrev- erent manual can save you the trouble of being an idiot on your own.

Doocy, co-host of Fox & Friends, who has been married for twenty consecutive years, provides real slice-of-life stories on everything from early marriage ("I love you, you're perfect, now wear this thong") and pregnancy ("You're eating for two? Who— you and Shaquille O'Neal?") to sending your child to college ("Is that a funnel?") and retirement (high-fiber appetizers on Viagra dates). Most of the stories conclude with "corrections" and additional wise words from Doocy's real-life wife, Kathy, who, after two decades of picking up Steve's socks in the garage, has developed a zany sense of humor herself.

There is also a handy troubleshooting section for when things go haywire, like during the eye- opening experiment undertaken especially for this book, wherein the author wanted to prove to his wife that they were perfect for each other, so he had them join an on-line dating service. Out of a database of several hundred thousand guys, he was not in her top 532 local men. Despite the fact that their one- month experiment ended a year ago, she's still getting photographs of single men whose head shots appear to have been taken at a recent skinhead convention. Luckily for him, she still prefers "bonehead to skinhead."

This book is a celebration of the pageantry that is wedlock, which starts with an "I do" and sometimes ends with a boiled rabbit. Let's face it, marriage isn't always as smooth as a forty-year-old's forehead after six months of Botox. In fact, marriage is ridiculously hard, but laughing about it is now incredibly easy with The Mr. & Mrs. Happy Handbook.

From AudioFile

There can never be too many guides to staying married, especially when they're as funny and insightful as this one. The Fox News Channel broadcaster shares hilarious anecdotes from his twenty-year marriage, as well as tongue-in-cheek advice for men on staying out of trouble with their wives. Steve Doocy is a humble teacher with a big heart who speaks with zesty appreciation for his one and only; his speaking voice conveys a perspective that both men and women will enjoy. However, his exaggerated speaking style will seem overreaching to some and too often competes for attention with his ideas. But with snippets of advice from his calmer-sounding wife to keep things in perspective, the production ultimately entertains. 5.0 out of 5 stars FUNNY FUNNY BOOK, October 18, 2006
This review is from: The Mr. & Mrs. Happy Handbook: Everything I Know About Love and Marriage (with corrections by Mrs. Doocy) (Hardcover)

The book is a combination Dave Barry and Irma Bombeck, looking at married life, that is loud laugh funny.

I particularly enjoyed the vignettes about the authors honeymoon at a leper colony with his wife 'Meg Ryan', the time the "naked gardener" wound up in the emergency room, and what happened when he bought his wife a coat 12 sizes too big. Also I can identify with him volunteering to coach his son's team, because nobody else would put his kid in the game.

I've seen this guy on the news, but I had no idea he was this FUNNY!

And there's actually a heart and soul to this book that leaves a positively great feeling about marriage.

This is now my official wedding gift (with a fifty taped inside). I've ordered copies for my my wife's sister, my parents, hers, and friends who are getting married in November.

I might start watching this guy more on tv, to see if he's this funny in real life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious: You're About To Laugh So Hard - So Make Sure You're Close To A Bathroom!, October 19, 2006
This review is from: The Mr. & Mrs. Happy Handbook: Everything I Know About Love and Marriage (with corrections by Mrs. Doocy) (Hardcover)
Hilarious!

This happens to be one of the funniest, and perhaps most useful books I have read in a long time! Yes, the world knows that boys and girls are different: our perspectives, our needs, and the way we communicate; however, in `The Mr. & Mrs. Happy Handbook: Everything I Know About Love and Marriage (with corrections by Mrs. Doocy)' by Steve Doocy I can't recall when a book celebrating the differences allowed the reader to remember one simple rule of life for which I think most individuals get married for: be happy!

Starting out with girl meets boy, or boy meets girl, or boy meets boy, or girl meets girl - whatever: marriage is the beginning of INTENDED long term happiness through partnership. Yet, there's this thing we all face: LIFE! Crap happens! How we deal with it . . . before the kids sets the pace. Doocy is trying and succeeding to share with us all not to take things too seriously, have a little compassion, and laugh as much as you can regardless of what happens. Be flexible. Then more stuff happens: CHILDREN! More flexibility is required! Doocy delivers such interesting stories relating to the life of marriage and children, that there's many things here for many different readers.

Cleverly dissecting most events married (or formerly married) individuals and parents alike can relate to, `The Mr. & Mrs. Happy Handbook: Everything I Know About Love and Marriage (with corrections by Mrs. Doocy)', is filled with such funny one-line zingers and hilariously awkward situations that readers who are married or intending to get married should truly consider running out and reading this most enjoyable book! I would like to provide one helpful hint to all readers before you begin reading: make sure you don't drink much liquid and make sure there's a bathroom close by! Who knew Doocy was so funny?! I may have to reconsider this whole thing of marriage myself one day soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and helpful, October 30, 2006
This review is from: The Mr. & Mrs. Happy Handbook: Everything I Know About Love and Marriage (with corrections by Mrs. Doocy) (Hardcover)
Even though my wife and I have been married almost twice as long as Steve Doocy (37 years, and countiing), it never hurts to get someone else's take on how to have a happy marriage. Steve is a very funny fellow, and I enjoy watching him every weekday morning on "Fox and Friends". He adds some brightness into any morning that appears gloomy to me, and his book does the same. His take on marriage, with all its fun and follies rings quite true, and the humor with which he presents it softens any heavy lesson being put across. All I can say is that his wife must be one outstanding lady to have lived with him all of these years, but I feel the same way about my own wife: why do such tremendous women select guys like Steve and me? Just one of life's little mysteries!
